Bradley 3. …………………………………………………… The 3rd-seeded Williamstown Charlottenburgh & Lancaster District Crusaders crushed the Kenora St. Thomas Aquinas Saints as Meghan MacDougall scored 20, Elissa DeWitt 17, M. Glover 8 and M Gareau 4. D.J. Karst paced the Saints with 6. R. Houle added 3, K Seniw 2 and M White 2. …………………………………………………… The 8th-seeded Barrie E.S. Catholique Nouvelle Alliance Les Tornades stuffed the Timmins O’Gorman Knights 43-20 as Rebecca Alize-Minty scored 17, E Black 6 and S Skinner 6. C Luxton paced the Knights with 8. A Farretto added 4, S Stringer 2 and A Sher 2. …………………………………………………… The 2nd-seeded Rockcliffe Ashbury Colts dumped the North Bay E.S. Algonquin Barons 43-24 as Illesha St-Helene Uko scored 16, Nicole Uher 10, Charlotte Ashe 9, H Dunlap 4 and A Ruddy 4. Chelsey Tremblay paced the Barons with 10. Jolinne Maisonneuve added 6, Camille Courville 4, Nadine Perron 2 and J. Martin 2. St-Helene Uko used her awkward- but-efficient mechanics to pour in a game-high 16 points, leaving coach Julie Rodrigue in no rush to change the way she shoots. “In Grade 11, if it goes in then …, ” Rodrigue said, throwing her arms open in a what-can-you-do fashion. She also noted it’s Basketball Canada practice to stop tinkering with a player’s shot once they reach Grade 11. “We’ll work on some different stuff with her, other than her jump shot,” Rodrigue added. St. Helene-Uko spearheaded a 23-6 first half Colts attack that relied on a full-throttle run-and-gun offence and efficient shot-making. The latter was probably the biggest difference between both teams. Too often the Colts would calmly knock back a shot, with or without a Baron in their face. Meanwhile, Algonquin had their chances to score, and even out-rebounded the defending OFSAA champs, but couldn’t put away the garbage consistently when it landed on their doorstep. In one second half possession, they collected at least three offensive rebounds but failed to score. In the first half, we were like deer in the headlights and we didn’t want to compete,” coach Tim Lowe said. We were afraid to make mistakes. And it’s like the saying, you miss every shot you don’t take. And when I asked the girls who took shots (in the first half), only three hands went up. If you’re on the floor, you’ve got to be a scorer. So you have to try and score, and that’s half the battle.” Rodrigue told the Ottawa Citizen “we ran a lot and we pushed the ball a lot,” said Colts coach Julie Rodrigue. “Having experienced players (off last year’s Single-A title unit) worked to our advantage. Illesha really stepped up and was quite the leader on the court.” …………………………………………………… The 5th-seeded Blenheim District Bobcats clipped the Oakville King’s Christian Cavaliers 47-30 as Andrea DeBrouwer scored 18, Shauna Campbell 6, Melissa Vandersluis 6, Ashly DeBrouwer 4 and Erin Mifflin 4. L. Dejong paced the Cavaliers with 10. K. Marra added 7, S. Schurman 5 and L. Ransan 4. Andrea DeBrouwer scored 13 in the first quarter as the Bobcats raced out to a 25- 10 lead. They seized control early by pushing the ball up the court on every possession. “It was the best that I’ve ever seen them transition the ball,” coach Karen Hearn said. Some pre-game scouting convinced the players they had to play an up-tempo game. “They watched a few games today and they realized they do need to push the ball to get those easy points,” Hearn said. “I think our fans took up half the gym today, which was good. I think everybody was surprised we were 6 1-2 hours away.” …………………………………………………… The Elliott Lake Atoms defeated the Hamilton Guido De Bres Christian Gryphons 55-40 as K Kluke scored 21, Felicia Mazerolle 14, J Hussey 8 and K Hunter 4. Bradley 2 and J. Maalouf 2. …………………………………………………… The Barrie E.S. Catholique Nouvelle Alliance Les Tornades edged the Kenora St. Thomas Aquinas Saints 42-38 as Rebecca Alize-Minty scored 17, M. Heney 12 and S. Skinner 6. Leona Boyd paced the Saints with 14. D.J. Karst added 10 and R. C. Hoeksma paced the Cavaliers with 4. A-M Slaa added 4, K. Shuurman 4 and S. Boot 3. …………………………………………………… The 4th-seeded Elliott Lake Atoms stomped the London Centre Desloges Panthers 68-40 as K. Kluke scored 24, F Mazerolle 21 and C Lees 7. Marie-Eve Tremblay paced the Panthers with 10. A. King added 9, A. Dunlop 5 and M Morelli 4. The Panthers took a 10-point lead but soon succumbed to the Atoms’ full-court pressure. “We simply couldn’t handle their press,” coach Chris Bogart said. “I’ll stand by our defence; it played well in the half-court. We executed well in the first five minutes in breaking their press, but then we stopped executing and that 10-point lead was gone in a matter of seconds. As the game progressed, we rushed a bit and when they turned us over, it was layup city. But in the big picture we’ve gone from not even having a team to making it to OFSAA to competing at OFSAA.”
In the quarterfinals, the North Bay E.S. Algonquin Barons nipped the 4th-seeded Elliott Lake Atoms 35-33 as Jolinne Maisonneuve scored 13, Camille Courville 8, S Desrochers 4, Nadine Perron 4 and M Willard 4. F Mazerolle paced the Atoms with 11. K Kluke added 10 and C Lees 5.

The 7th-seeded Cornwall Holy Trinity Falcons stunned the 2nd-seeded Rockcliffe Ashbury Colts 35-30 as Sarah Brand scored 13, Brittany Derochie 9, Angela Levac 8 and Natalie Levac 3. Charlotte Ashe led the Colts with 17. H Dunlap added 4, Nicole Uher 4 and Illesha St-Helene Uko 3. “Our girls played the game of their lives,” said Falcons co-coach Dave McCabe. “I think we shocked ourselves,” player Brittany Derochie said. “We played beautifully, it was our best game of the year.” The Colts (coached by Andy Sparks) also included Celyna Arnold,

The 3rd-seeded Williamstown Charlottenburgh & Lancaster District Crusaders dumped the Port Hope Trinity College Bigside 53-43 as Meghan MacDougall scored 14, Kaitlyn Phillips 14, Elissa DeWitt 11 and Melanie Glover 9. Jordan Rider paced the Bears with 14. Vicky Campbell added 11, C Reed 8 and S Thomson 4.

In the last quarterfinal, the top-seeded Kitchener Rockway Mennonite Flames crushed the Barrie E.S. Catholique Nouvelle Alliance Les Tornades 37-22 as Laura Burnett scored 20, L Wismer 8, Stephanie Fast 5, J. Richter 2 and Clare Schellenberg 2. Rebecca Alize-Minty led the Tornades with 8. S. Funnell added 6, S Skinner 4 and J Fickett 3.

In the semis, the 3rd-seeded Williamstown Charlottenburgh & Lancaster District Crusaders stomped the 7th-seeded Cornwall Holy Trinity Falcons 35-18 as Meghan MacDougall scored 13, Elissa DeWitt 10, Kaitlin Phillips 4 and Candice McKay 3. Natalie Levac paced the Falcons with 8. Angela Levac added 5, K Lemoline 3 and Sarah Brand 2. The Crusaders led 6-5 after one quarter and 12-5 at the half. “They’re familiar with us, and they clog the middle . . . we just don’t have enough outside shooting to (overcome that),” said Falcons co-coach Dave McCabe.

In the other semi, the top-seeded Kitchener Rockway Mennonite Flames defeated the North Bay E.S. Algonquin Barons 41-34 as Laura Burnett scored 16, Clare Schellenberg 10 and Shyla Fast 7. Jolinne Maisonneuve led the Barons with 19. Chelsey Tremblay added 6 and Nadine Perron 5.

In the bronze medal match, the 7th-seeded Cornwall Holy Trinity Falcons dumped the North Bay E.S. Algonquin Barons 33-22 as Natalie Levac scored 11, Sarah Brand 10, Angela Levac 8 and Brittany Derochie 4. Joline Maisonneuve led the Barons with 9. Camille Courville added 7. “We’re just thrilled with the result,” said Falcons co-coach Dave McCabe. “I’ve been doing this for a while, and I’ve never been to a (championship day) Saturday at OFSAA.” The Barons broke to a 7-0 lead but the Falcons clawed back. “It’s pretty exciting, it’s pretty special for us,” said veteran senior Sara Brand. “The pressure was on a little bit. All year we talked about our ultimate goal being to medal at OFSAA. … We were a higher seed (sixth) last year (at OFSAA), but this year there just seemed to be a lot more energy.” Angela Levac added that “we knew what to expect because it was our (second time at OFSAA).” The Falcons zone defence proved an impossible riddle for the Barons to resolve. “Sara Brand, our captain who’s been playing senior since Grade 9, was amazing,” McCabe said. “She had the game of her life (Friday). She got boards, she was our high scorer, she drove, I credit that win to her. She has always been a leader, our captain, and a tireless defender. She was the key . . . she has always been a great defender and scored about six to eight points per game for us. This weekend she was scoring in double digits for us, so she did very well.” Barons coach Tim Lowe said his squad was “probably the funnest team I’ve had in my career as far as keeping things in perspective in that it’s just a game. They’re going to have fun, and they’re going to have a lot of good memories from their four years playing basketball here at this school. And some of them got to end their career in their own gym at an OFSAA. Not much more you can ask for other than that.”

In the final, the top-seeded Kitchener Rockway Mennonite Flames defeated the 3rd-seeded Williamstown Charlottenburgh & Lancaster District Crusaders 53-47 as Laura Burnett scored 21, Clare Schellenberg 15, Stephanie Fast 8 and L Wismer 6. Meghan MacDougall paced the Crusaders with 18. Elissa DeWitt added 11, Kaitlyn Phillips 10 and Melanie Glover 6. The Flames precision touch from the outside scorched the Char-Lan Crusaders down the stretch. “It was amazing,” said Flames point guard Laura Burnett. “This is a record for our school and it’s probably the last year we’re going to have a good team like this. It was good that we got gold. Just winning feels amazing.” It wasn’t easy though as Burnett and her dynamic Crusaders counterpart, guard Meaghan MacDougall, exchanged big baskets from behind the arc. Twice the Flames surged to double-digit leads, and both times the Crusaders charged back to make a game of it. Crusaders coach Jim Fourney said “early in the first half, when they got up on us by 12 points, we could have just folded. But we didn’t. We dug down deep and we made a game of it. I’m really proud of my kids that we could actually play with them and make a game of it.” Trailing 36-34 at the end of the third quarter, the Crusaders got too trigger happy and started jacking up shots whenever they had a chance. Meanwhile, Burnett and forward Clare Schellenberg waited out their chance to knock down open jumpers. “The fact we hit them was the difference,” Flames head coach Bernie Burnett said. “If they don’t go in then it’s a whole different ball game. They went down today, a lot of them, but the other team was hitting inside shots, outside shots so we were playing for our lives.” Burnett told the Kitchener-Waterloo Record that “somehow they had us as the number one seed. We always try to go and do better than our seed. But when I saw one, I thought ‘uh-oh’. … How do I put this into words? It was a combination of everything coming together from our managers to coaches to starters to bench players. The most exciting thing of the whole tournament for me is that every single player scored a basket.”
