In the quarterfinals, 2nd-seeded Amherstburg St. Thomas of Villanova Wildcats whipped the Desbarats Central Algoma Huskies 64-33. Villanova led 20-4 after one quarter and 33-21 at the half. “We pressed them hard all game and Nicole (Stacyszyn) turned in some outstanding defence on their point guard (Carrie Pollard),” Villanova coach Tony Piazza told the Windsor Star. “Although she got her points, Nicole denied her getting the ball to their 6-3 center (Sara Coutu).” In the absence of starting center Kit Higginbottom, who was attending her grandmother’s funeral, Renee Bezaire, Dayna Rodrigues and Tanya D’Amore stepped in admirably. Jen D’Alosio led Villanova with 27. Carrie Pollard notched 16 for Central Algoma. Sara Coutu added 9. The Huskies also included Cindy Fiegehen, Leann Gosselin.
The Niagara-on-the-Lake Niagara District Trojans edged the Brockville St. Mary’s Crusaders 44-42 (also reported as 46-42) as Nancy MacDougall scored 17, Megan Daley 15 and Angela Typer 11.
The 5th-seeded North Dorchester Lord Dorchester Secondary Beavers defeated the 4th-seeded Rockcliffe Ashbury Colts 54-47. The Colts (coached by Andy Sparks, assisted by Robert Napier and managed by Matthew Coleridge) included Alexandra Howard, Deanah Shelly, Jennifer Gravel, Anne-Marie Baribeau, Courtney Davis, Janet Rawlinson, Nadya Dhalla, Meghan Kennedy, Sandra Rainbow, Jill Howes-Siekierski and Sylvia Smellie.
In the last quarterfinal, the top-seeded St. Thomas St. Joseph’s Rams spanked the Almonte Orangewomen 51-37.
In the semis, the 2nd-seeded Amherstburg St. Thomas of Villanova Wildcats defeated the Niagara-on-the-Lake Niagara District Trojans 31-21 as Nicole Stacyszyn scored 18 and Jen D’Aloisio 7. Megan Daly and Angela Typer each scored 6 to lead the Trojans.
In the other semi, the top-ranked St. Thomas St. Joseph’s Rams defeated 5th-seeded North Dorchester Lord Dorchester Secondary Beavers 60-47.
In the bronze medal match, the North Dorchester Lord Dorchester Secondary Beavers nipped the Niagara-on-the-Lake Niagara District Trojans 52-50. Megan Daley led the Trojans with 22. Nancy MacDougall added 12. Trojans coach Don MacDougall told the St. Catharines Standard that “we played well defensively, but we couldn’t score.” The Trojans (coached by Don MacDougall, assistant Wes Lowrey, manager Andrew Harber, supervisor? Miss Newman) also included Jodi Kostecki, Angela Typer, Tracy Lawson, Diane Reimer, Lucy Askham, Dina Debon, Kim Legros, Amanda Steele and Jodi Steele.
In the final, the top-seeded St. Thomas St. Joseph’s Rams defeated 2nd-seeded Amherstburg St. Thomas of Villanova Wildcats 47-44. Villanova coach Tony Piazza told the Windsor Star that the officials “swallowed their whistles down the stretch.” With St. Joseph’s leading 47-43, Nicole Pietrangelo was fouled a three-point field attempt. She missed her first, hit the second and then purposefully missed the third in hopes a teammate could get the rebound. Kit Higginbottom got the board and three attempts at a hoop, each of which she missed, and on each of which, said Piazza, she was fouled. Piazza noted that there were 15 fouls against the Wildcats in the first half, as compared to 4 for the Rams. “They played their hearts out,” said Piazza. “To be second in the province is pretty respectable.” Jen D’Aloisio led Villanova with 18. Nicole Stacyszyn added 13.
