The Cavaliers led 29-20 at the half and 40-29 after three quarters. Trailing 48-46, the Knights actually had a shot to tie, or win the game but Skyler Cornell’s trey bounced off the rim. “We had the ball with 15 seconds left and we ended up shooting a three and it just didn’t drop for us,” said Knights coach Don Davis. “It was a good open shot, but it just didn’t drop. We feel comfortable with the ball in his (Cornell) hands and we feel comfortable with the decisions that he makes.” The Knights opened with a 12-2 run. “Then we just sort of laid back and they pounded us,” Davis said. “We played about four minutes of basketball the whole game … that’s why we lost. We played very uncharacteristic basketball for us. We turned the ball over 30-plus times and we rarely turn the ball over. We definitely had a subpar game at a real bad time. We had that intensity and maybe we felt confident that we were going to win the game, but I don’t know … I don’t really have any words to explain what happened. I told the boys this is the first time that we have lost a game all year, because every other game that we came out with less points the other team was the better team. But I feel this was a game that was ours to take and we just didn’t compete. They were extremely physical with us and we are not a big team by no means. They were extremely physical and the refs just let them play … let both teams play … and that physicality took over the game.” Michael Panza paced the Cavaliers with 22. The Fighting Irish led 25-23 at the half and 40-35 after three quarters. “We focus on our defensive intensity to wear down our opponents,” St. Pat’s coach David Howson told Canadian Press. “Our seniors really stepped up tonight. We didn’t get out shooting as well as I had hoped in the first, but one kid’s starting sinking as the game went on.” Cormac Brown was elated to have his name engraved on the A trophy, given that father Pat and uncle Dave had accomplished the feat in 1970. Dad “is pretty emotional. He was crying and he’s happy. It’s pretty cool.” Guard Alex Mariuz added “that last 15 seconds when I got subbed off, that’s when I knew it was done. We’d completed our mission. It was tough, intense defence and running teams into the ground.” Evan McDougall added that “it was really a war of attrition and we really wore teams down.” Cavaliers coach Eric Bulthius said his troops benefitted from player bigger schools all season. “Any time we had an opportunity, we played games within the game, like let’s score the next five points. Every time we were down in the fourth quarter, whether it was by 10 points or 30, we said, ‘What’s our goal?’ Our goal was to win a medal at OFSAA. Even when guys were pretty dejected in certain games, it was about what our goal was.” Post Zack Moll said “it was tough, man. For most of the guys, we all thought ‘this just sucks.’ You didn’t even want to play anymore. But you had to fight through it.” It paid off, Moll added. “I’m a little bit surprised. I think our guys just stepped up at the right time and we played some of the best basketball we did all year.” Bulthius said “we had (Canadian and American university) caliber players on teams before and finished fourth two years in a row. It does take a guy who is the epitome of a role player, like Zack Moll, to bring everyone together. No one was looking at scoresheets after the game — not that they did a few years ago — but we all needed to work together.” Alexander Mariuz paced the Fighting Irish with 12. Joshua Lockwood added 10, Paul Whitson 10, Cormac Brown 10, Evan McDougall 9, Joel Mahon 6 and Jay McAuley 2, while Jason Bento, Taylor Dibrita, Preston Worsley, Travis Garrity, Tyler Johnson-Barnes, Min Kang, James Pavey and Joseph Jarvis were scoreless.
