Said coach Martin Vaillancourt: “We’ve tried to create an environment where everybody knows his role, where everyone has love and respect for each other . . . they’re together on the (basketball court), in the weight room — it creates a brotherhood.” St. Thomas Aquinas coach Joe Pelaia said “someone told me we were the Cinderella team from Kenora,” head coach Joe Pelaia said. “Well, I guess we were . . . we really did exceed our expectations.” The Saints, who had to fly from Winnipeg to Ottawa just to get close to Cornwall, were short-staffed because four regulars said they couldn’t afford the costs involved in attending an OFSAA so far away from home. “It’s really too bad, because they missed a great time here,” Pelaia said. The squad drove around Cornwall in a white stretch limo. Coach Pelaia had costed it out, and a limousine, he said, was cheaper than renting a pair of vans. “It was sweet–the boys loved it,” Pelaia said with a wide smile. “That’s what memories are made of, right?” Vaillancourt said “when they were handing out the gold medal, the gentleman from OFSAA said something that really touched me. He said when thinking of ACMT he doesn’t think of a great basketball team, but a basketball program. I went ‘yes’. That’s what you work for, to have a competitive team year after year. We’re not doing it because we have a shot at winning. We’re doing it because we have a good team coming back and we’ve been so used to playing the Cathedrals and St. Thomas Mores … we’re more than prepped. … We feel blessed. We got the third one under our belt. We took control and never trailed in the tournament once.” Kevin Amisso paced the Jaguars with 21.
