Josh Martin added 13. Perimeter shooting gave the Patriotes the lead at the half 29-25. Both teams scored in transition and moved the ball effectively against zone defences. In the second half, both teams switched to man. L’Essor passed the ball effectively to take the lead down the stretch. Steve Blair missed a trey at the buzzer to win it for Pain Court.
The 4th-seeded York Humber Bears dumped the 15th-seeded Blind River W.C. Eaket Royals 58-3 as Martin Lawrence scored 18 and Delroy Willis 12. The Bears capitalized on transition baskets and worked the high-low game well. Eaket played smart to keep it reasonably close but they had trouble with York Humber’s relentless pressure. At the half, the Bears led 36-19. York Humber pulled away in the second half.
In the last quarterfinal, the 2nd-seeded Hamilton Hillfield-Strathallan Trojans defeated 10th-seeded Mississauga Mentor College Marauders 68-56 as Adam Ruickbie scored 18 and Steve Raphael 12. Harsimran Braich led Mentor with 18. Martin Konceny added 14. The game was knotted at 13 and at 29 through the first two quarters but the Trojans took command in the third as the Marauders tired.
In the semis, the 4th-seeded York Humber Bears defeated the 9th-seeded Delhi District Raiders 40-37 as Delroy Willis scored 19 and Martin Lawrence 12. Matt Roy led Delhi with 10. Josh Golding added 10. Both teams were tentative and quickly in foul trouble in the first half. But Delroy Willis hit a pair from beyond the arc to give the Bears a 21-14 lead at the half. Delhi lost point guard Max Adam early in the second half but kept within reach on the inside play of Matt Roy and the perimeter shooting of Dan DeCloet. The score was tied with minutes to play when Dan Suralie twice stole the ball on inbounds plays and then a free throw as York Humber eked out the win.
In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Hamilton Hillfield-Strathallan Trojans dumped the 6th-seeded Tecumseh E.S. L’Essor Les Aigles 66-52 as Mark Bennett and Topher Morris each scored 16. Steve Raphael added 15. Ali Zaidan paced L’Essor with 22. Brandon Rondot and Dylan Coady each added 11. Hillfield relied on the perimeter shooting of Mark Bennett early on while L’Essor attacked the key. Ali Zaidan had 9 pts for Les Aigles who led 15 to 14 at the quarter. L’Essor moved the ball well to open up an 8-point lead. But the Trojans went on an 11-0 run to end the half and take a 31-28 lead on Topher Morris’ trey. Morris had the hot hand again in the third quarter nailing three treys as the Trojans opened up a 15-point lead. L’Essor closed the gap to 11 at one point in the fourth quarter but could get no closer.
In the bronze medal match, the 6th-seeded Tecumseh E.S. L’Essor Les Aigles dumped the 9th-seeded Delhi District Raiders 49-38 as Ali Zaidan scored 19 and Bobby Stanton 13. Josh Golding led the Raiders with 10. Matt Roy added 8. The Raiders also included Max Adam, Rick Pryce. The game was tied at 13 after one quarter. Les Aigles led 25-17 at the half and 40-30 after three quarters.
In the final, the 2nd-seeded Hamilton Hillfield-Strathallan Trojans defeated the 4th-seeded York Humber Bears 43-32 as Adam Ruckbie scored 10 and Topher Harris 6. Delroy Willis led York Humber with 20. Emmanuel Adekolu added 6. York Humber jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the strength of the inside work of Martin Lawrence and Delroy Harris. Hillfield recovered nicely moving the ball well offensively for some easy scores as they moved ahead 13-12 at the quarter. York Humber inched back to a 21-20 lead at the half. But the Trojans got their flex offence rolling in the second half, particularly after Martin Lawrence went to the bench with three fouls. The Trojans led 32-25 after the three quarters and ran a delay through most of the fourth quarter to take the title. “It was a pretty awesome experience,” Trojans guard Greg Mousseau told the Hamilton Spectator. “This was the biggest championship I’ve ever won. We knew we had a solid team, but we weren’t sure of the competition. We hadn’t played many of the teams there before. … We knew they were a fast break team, but they couldn’t shoot from the outside. They had to shoot from under the basket and rebound. We had to figure how to slow down their offence.” Trojans coach David Wright said his troops executed the stall impeccably down the stretch. “Eventually, we knew they would have to back off. They got impatient and that’s what we wanted. It gave us an opportunity to go to the basket.”
