Mike Danielson scored five points and had one assist to give the Gryphons a 26-19 halftime lead. Danielson also had another two baskets in the third quarter to push the lead to 10. Tyler Greavette paced Gravenhurst with 14. Danielson added 12. Tommy-Jo St. John led Ashbury with 9. The 2nd-seeded Delhi District Raiders rolled over the Fort Erie Ridgeway-Crystal Beach Blue Devils 92-48 as Brian Buomo scored 29. Dan Aquilyna led the Blue Devils with 17.
The 8th-seeded Toronto Crescent Wild Coyotes stunned the top-seeded Hamilton Hillfield-Strathallan Trojans 40-38 in double-overtime as Roger Doche connected on both ends in a one-and-one situation with six seconds to play. Doche scored 11 to lead the Wild Coyotes. Keegan Johnson paced the Trojans with 12. The Trojans (coach Rob Reiner) also included Caine Baldassi.
In the last quarterfinal, the 5th-seeded St. Thomas St. Joseph’s Rams defeated the 4th-seeded Windsor Villanova Wildcats 82-56 as Chris Carren scored 26. The Wildcats hopes were dashed after star Jamie Stewart picked up four fouls in the first quarter. “I’m sure they had scouted Jamie in the afternoon,” Wildcats assistant Tony D’Aloisio told the Windsor Star. “Every time he went up for a shot, they had their hands all over him. We just were not getting the calls and Jamie was getting frustrated.” Stewart scored 17 and Scott Miller 14. “We thought we could win it and we thought we’d at least be in the top four, so it’s a bit of a disappointment,” D’Aloisio said. The Wildcats also included Scott Wilson, Rich Durocher.
In the semis, the 8th-seeded Toronto Crescent Wild Coyotes defeated the 5th-seeded St. Thomas St. Joseph’s Rams 73-63.
In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded Gravenhurst Gryphons defeated the 2nd-seeded Delhi District Raiders 65-56 after rallying from a 16-point second-quarter deficit.
In the bronze medal match, the 2nd-seeded Delhi District Raiders dumped the 5th-seeded St. Thomas St. Joseph’s Rams 68-47 as Brian Bouma scored 19, Geoff Stead 17 and Andy Newman 15. Steve Hatch led the Rams with 9.
In the final, the 3rd-seeded Gravenhurst Gryphons defeated the 8th-seeded Toronto Crescent Wild Coyotes 51-43 to capture their first provincial crown. Tyler Greavette paced the Gryphons with 16. B.J. Henderson added 12 and Mark Chute 11. Andrew Rupf, a 6-8 post, paced the Coyotes with 23. “This is incredible, just incredible, Gravenhurst coach Gerry Bray told the Ottawa Citizen. “We had a few outside shooters (Greavette and Chute) who made the difference, Bray said. The Coyotes were playing without 6-5 forward Marc St. Jacques, who left after the semi for a family holiday in Florida. “The boys played their hearts out, but we were a bit short, said Crescent coach Terry Bidiak. “The defence was fine, but we couldn’t get the offence going. Andy was our bread and butter all the time. He was good in the first half, but they double teamed him in the second half and the others were dry.”
