In the opening round of a 14-team draw, held in Belleville: …………………………………………………… The 2nd-seeded Parkhill North Middlesex Marauders defeated the top-seeded Elgin Rideau District Lions 60-43 as 6-11 post Rick Rosu-Myles dominated the paint. Both teams were to get a bye into the quarterfinals so the score didn’t matter, said coach Robert Stephenson. “We played the first game with the intent of trying a lot of different things and hoped to learn a little bit without being too concerned with the score. But it was quite a convincing win. They were very strong. They were a large, large team. These guys had been ranked second for the last two years and they had really come in with something to prove.” The Lions had gone into the tournament ranked first and Stephenson felt the loss took a lot of the pressure off his players. “Once we had gone through that initial defeat, in a way it probably helped our kids because they then didn’t have to worry about anyone looking at them and they could just go out and play basketball.” Both Rosu-Myles and 6-6 Jeff McGee tossed in 20 points for North Middlesex. Rickey Taylor led the Lions with 11. …………………………………………………… The 14th-seeded Windsor Shawnee Warriors clipped the 13th-seeded Geraldton Composite Knights 70-50 as Ian Coaton scored 18, Colin Calvert 16 and Tony Borders 15.         In the quarterfinals, top-seeded Elgin Rideau District Lions defeated the 7th-seeded Rockcliffe Ashbury Colts 65-55 as Rick Taylor scored 26. Jason Dewar led the Colts with 15. The Colts (coached by Andy Sparks, assisted by R.B. Napier) also included Hugh Bell, J. Robertson, M Quamina, M Storey, Duncan Pound, P Bartlett, P Fong, A Baribeau, A Movilla, K Elfar and J Starr.

The 5th-seeded Woodbridge Wyverns defeated the 14th-seeded Windsor Shawnee Warriors 59-53. The Warriors led 47-36 after three quarters but began coughing the ball up against the Wyverns’ full-court press, while Frank Femla had all the answers for Woodbridge down the stretch. The Wyverns ripped off a 23-6 run down the stretch. “It’s unfortunate that just one short stretch of play turned it all around because we had played so well,” Shawnee coach Richard Beckendorf told the Windsor Star. “But they jumped on us right at the start of the last quarter and our lead held up only briefly. … Most of the teams here play a man-to-man defence and we had withstood that pressure quite well through the earlier two games and most of this one. But they really stopped us in that one quarter. On top of that, we found the officiating quite different from that in Windsor and there were a few calls (and non-calls) that I thought were a little questionable.” Frank Femla led the Wyverns with 26. Dino Constantos added 12, Harper 10, Sharma 9 and Robinson 2. Ian Coaton paced the Warriors with 20. Tony Borders added 14, Colin Calvert 10, Roberts 7 and Nigel Beaton 2.

The Parkhill North Middlesex Marauders dusted the Gravenhurst Gryphons 62-42.

In the last quarterfinal, the 4th-seeded Timmins O’Gorman Knights clipped the 11th-seeded Langton Valley Heights Secondary Bears 58-48 as David Gardiner scored 26. George Friesen led the Bears with 22.

In the semis, the top-seeded Elgin Rideau District Lions defeated the 4th-seeded Timmins O’Gorman Knights 64-37. “The kids really played outstanding defence,” said coach Bob Stephenson. “They really played well.”

In the other semi, the Parkhill North Middlesex Marauders defeated the Woodbridge Wyverns x-x.

In the bronze medal match, Timmins O’Gorman Knights clocked the Woodbridge Wyverns 59-46 as David Gardiner scored 15. Dino Constantos led the Wyverns with 19.

In the final, the top-seeded Elgin Rideau District Lions avenged the opening round loss by defeating the 2nd-seeded Parkhill North Middlesex Marauders 34-31 in a tight defensive affair. The Lions collapsed their defence in the paint to stop 6-11 Rick Rosu-Myles, while constantly double-teaming 6-6 Jeff McGee. The Lions Dennis Serson and Paul Dier were given the job of shutting down McGee while Scott Rice and Brad Mainse were put on Rosu-Myles. The tactics worked. By the end of the game McGee had scored only nine points while Rosu-Myles was held to only two. “The kids did the job,” Stephenson told the Kingston Whig-Standard. “He said they didn’t expect things to go quite as well as they did, particularly with regards to Rosu-Myles. It was a real defensive struggle. People asked afterwards if we anticipated that kind of score and we said we had no idea what to anticipate. We just wanted to focus on defence and work really hard. And if we did that, we thought we might have a chance to get our baskets. And the kids ran really well which helped us too because we got a few easy baskets that way.” RDHS’s Rick Taylor helped the scoring by going six for six from the foul line in the final few minutes of the game. Stephenson said a three-pointer by Glenn Hayes also gave his team an extra push. “That really changed the complexion of the game for the kids because all of a sudden it was very close and I think North Middlesex realized they were in a real game. So there were a couple of kids there in terms of offence but it was those kids doing the defensive job that probably turned the tide.” Rick Taylor led the Lions with 12. Todd Beamish paced the Marauders with 12.
