Trojans coach Jim Laird told the Windsor Star that “we came in a little apprehensive after being seeded number one because we wanted to prove we deserved it. I was nervous because I really didn’t know what to expect but we settled down fairly quickly though. I don’t think Penetanguishene was used to being pressured man-to-man all game the way we played them today. Our guys really did a great job.” The Trojans dominated the boards, particularly 6-8 post Bill Shane and 6-3 forward Randy Lambert. …………………………………………………… The 2nd-seeded Niagara-on-the-Lake Niagara District Trojans edged the Seaforth District Golden Bears 74-72 as Steve Ralke scored 32, Allen MacDougall 20 and Murray Marderosian 12. Trojans coach Don MacDougall told the Windsor Star that “I think Seaforth was surprised we had a little left down at the finish. We just have a bunch of guys who dig that little big deeper in key situations.” The Trojans led 34-31 at the half but the Golden Bears rallied on the perimeter shooting of Greg Murray. Post Steve Ralke took command for Niagara down the stretch. Seaforth coach Terry Johnston said “you’d think after playing 40 games, a team would be able to execute under pressure, wouldn’t you? We didn’t, and that was the difference. Our shooting was terrible at the start and not much better at the end. Our defence was atrocious and since defence is mostly desire, that tells you something right there.” …………………………………………………… The Blind River W.C. Eaket Royals clipped the Tecumseh E.S. I pretty much let the players figure things out for themselves once the game starts. If the other team calls a timeout, I rarely say anything because they’re the ones with the problem, not us. Our only rule is that we call a timeout if the other club hits three straight baskets.” Marc Fassette led Les Aigles with 19. Daniel Paulin added 10. MacDougall told the Windsor Star that “I didn’t mean to foul him but I figured to go after the block because he had a pretty easy shot. At worst, we’d be in overtime and at best, we’d win.” Niagara District coach Don MacDougall said “I felt really sorry for (Lambert) because that’s an awful spot to be in. I was almost hoping he’d make it for his sake and that we’d be sent into overtime. But if he had, we’d have been dead turkey without Allen in there.” Gananocque coach Jim Laird said “no question, the youngster surprised us. We didn’t think he was that good a shooter. We had three guys rotating on him in the first quarter and nobody could get a handle on him.” MacDougall said “yeah, I’ve been that hot before. Sometimes you get a feeling everything is going to drop and today I had it. Before today, I felt like I’d been in a slump and I was scared I might not snap out of it. … Steve did an excellent job. He’s so strong, he just kept their big guy off balance all game.” Gananocque took a 47-45 lead with four minutes to play but Niagara rallied to a 52-47 lead on a 7-0 run. A MacDougall bucket off an Andrew Cowan steal made it 54-51 but a three-point play by Bill Shane tied it. Laird said “there were 10 guys taking that shot (the free throw) with Randy. I have to talk to him about that and make sure he doesn’t take all the responsibility himself.”
