In the last quarterfinal, the 2nd-seeded London Mother Theresa Spartans edged the 13th-seeded Belle River St. Anne Catholic Saints 57-54. “What a crazy game. Oh, my goodness, it was crazy,” said Spartans head coach Jami Pizzari, whose team had an 18-point lead at one point in the third quarter, only to see a game-tying three from the Saints bounce off the rim with 2.4 seconds left. “They must have had a thousand people in that gym; it was rocking and they got a lot of energy from that. They had spurts where they would hit back-to-back-to-back threes. It wasn’t like we weren’t defending, they were just hitting shots. We didn’t help ourselves by missing the front end of three one-and-ones down the stretch, but that was what an OFSAA game was all about. A lot of teams that get down by 18 to the No. 2 seed would fold like a cheap tent, but they really hung in there.” Saints forward Meighen Boyd said “I was jumping up and down because it looked like it was going in. It was in and out.” Spartans point guard Regan Duff said “they played an amazing game. We were lucky to survive that last three.” After falling behind 18-8 after a quarter, it seemed like St. Anne might get overwhelmed by halftime. Only Boyd had scored in the game for the Saints at that point as the Spartans exploited the various mismatches. However, 1:17 into the second quarter, Tori LaRocque joined Boyd on the scoresheet with a driving layup down the lane that ignited the Saints. With Boyd draining four triples in the first half, the Saints clawed their way back by outscoring the Spartans 20-11 in the quarter to claw within 29-28 at the half. “We played better defence (in the second quarter),” said point guard Amanda Milanis. “We moved the ball better on offence and started taking some shots.” Duff said “in the second quarter, we got too excited from building the big lead. They just kept coming back all game.” The third quarter was similar to the first as the Spartans methodically rebuilt their lead. The Saints weren’t hitting their outside shots and their offensive trips were mostly one and done as they watched London build a 51-33 lead. But Milanis and Marissa McNaughton drained three-pointers and LaRocque hit a jumper at the buzzer for an eight-point burst in the quarter’s final 30 seconds. Boyd hit another trey 30 seconds into the final frame to make it 51-44. “They had a couple of girls (Rebecca Harmsworth and Emma Thompson) that were hurting us,” Boyd said. “When we shut them down, we started to come back.” The Saints whittled the lead down to 55-54 with 2:40 to play, but Thompson answered with one of the Spartans’ three baskets in the quarter to stem the momentum. The Spartans’ offensive struggles extended to the free-throw line where they had four opportunities in the bonus to stick the dagger in and failed to convert or get the rebound. It allowed the Saints several chances to get the tie, but despite having the ball on the rim a number of times, it wouldn’t fall. “We got lucky there,” Duff said. “Our defence had to come up big at the end.” Rebecca Harmsworth paced the Spartans with 15. Emma Thompson added 13 and Regan Duff 12. Meighen Boyd led the Saints with 19. Amanda Milanis added 10. The Saints, coached by Andy Kiss, assisted by Roger Mousseau and Rebecca D’Amore, also included Andrea Kiss, Jocelyn Guilbeault, Tiffany Trembley, Meaghan Milanis, Tori LaRocque, Amanda Milanis, Alana Gyemi, Emilie Teno, Marissa McNaughton, Nadya Morrow and Amber Bechard.
