Lauren Stewart said “we usually have a slow start to a game and we’re trying to work through that. We picked it up in the second half and dominated it.” Knights coach Blaize Spironello said “we’re usually a pretty good defensive team but we just couldn’t put them away. Every time we got the flow of the game going, we would be in proper position on defence and they would get back into it. At halftime, we stressed taking pride in our defence like we usually do. That second half, we played defence like we should.” Kimberly Lee and Reem Rekieh each scored 11 to pace McGivney. Tauralee Tenn added 11, Katherine Newry 2 and Gayla Schwartz 2. Defending champ St. Mary’s, winners of five of the last seven provincial titles, led 27-22 at the half and wore down the Gryphons in the second half. “They just had too much depth for us. The Gryphons (coached by Shoup) also included Catherine Newry.
The Hamilton Westdale Warriors defeated the Collingwood Fighting Owls 48-40. “It makes me proud to be from Hamilton,” Susan Shaw-Davis told the Hamilton Spectator. “Marie (Warner) and I, two of the seniors who have never been this far in OFSAA. This is just huge for us, just huge.” Kristin Harse said “we weren’t uptight at all this game. Everybody played and played well.” The Warriors led 31-20 at the half. Marie Warner and Alaine Hutton each scored 11 to pace the Warriors. Kristin Harse added 8. Harse noted that the tight affair belied the fact that the Warriors were in control. “You don’t get extra points for scoring a ton of points on a team that is weaker than you. The coach wanted to play everybody. He wanted to get our bench all involved.” Alaine Hutton added that “there might not be another opportunity like that for them (the bench) to play. We were always in control of the game. You don’t get bonuses for blowing teams out.” Westdale held a 9-2, 19-9 and 33-24 at the quarters. Marie Warner led the Warriors with 13. Alaine Hutton added 8. Katerina Parkinson added 12, Kayleigh Rafter 9, Marcie Bruder 8, Danielle Reno 6 and Jenna Campagnolo 4. The Lions outscored the Warriors 17-6 in the final quarter. “To go to OFSAA is an accomplishment,” Lions coach Brian Halford told the Guelph Mercury. “To medal at OFSAA is another story completely. We didn’t want to come fourth. I’m so proud of what they did.” Perri said “Katrina meant a lot. She stepped up big. I was getting double-teamed so she knew what to do.” Westdale led 31-30 at halftime but the Lions held the Warriors to just two points in the third, while building a 47-33 edge. “The semifinal was a tough game, or course,” Perry said. “Everyone felt that was our last game, a lot of emotions were flowing. I’m really happy (with bronze).” Marie Warner paced Westdale with 16. Rachel Harrison added 11, Alaine Hutton 9, Susan Shaw-Davis 7, Beth Jenkins 2 and Stephanie McGinnis 2. The Warriors (coach Barry Hutton) also included Kristina Harse, Stephanie Yates, Brittany Prenger, Laure Gelens, Kayla Wilson and Elizabeth Syrotiuk.

Tamika Nurse led St. Thomas More with 16. Taylor Smith added 7, Lauren Stewart 6, Laura Stringer 2 and Ashley Amodeo 2. The Crusaders repeated despite losing three starters. But returnees Cari te Boekhorst and Heather Angus, combined with Grade 12 guard Amanda Tofano, Grade 10 forward Sara Pilon-Bignell and Grade 9s Sandra Cers and Taylor Chiarot to give St. Mary’s its fifth crown in six years. “We had never all played together before,” te Boekhorst told the Hamilton Spectator. “We’ve improved so much since the start of the year.” Cers was in a car accident midway through the season, breaking her fingers and her wrist, as a result of which she was lost for the season. Chiarot stepped in. “Gold is so much better than silver,” te Boekhorst said. Tofano said entering the tournament as the third seed was a motivator. “We were third. Now we’re first. I love it.” The Crusaders led 8-7, 19-14 and 29-26 at the quarters. Knights guard Taylor Smith said “we were prepared for this game. It just wasn’t our day. It didn’t come out right. It was good experience just to be here. We represented Hamilton well. The two top teams in the province are from Hamilton.” Crusader guard Heather Angus said “it was the hardest trip I’ve had in my four years, but it was the most fun. I couldn’t be more proud of the girls. There’s a lot of pressure when you’re the favourites, but when you’re the underdogs nobody expects you to win except you and your team.” Crusaders coach Rich Wesolowski said “the way the kids came together at the end of the season and in this tournament was amazing. I had Grade 9 and Grade 10 kids step up like they were seniors and the way the veterans really came through at the end was great.”
