The Crusaders overcame a sluggish start as their defence took the Bengals out of their comfort zone. “We just seem to start out like this all the time and if we’re not careful it can hurt us,” Curtis Trotter told the Toronto Star. “I had fun but this is an Ontario playoff and our coaches were all over us for the bad start – and they were right.” Marvin Whyte, who tied the game 26-26 with 2 33 left before the half, connected on a rare five-point play – scoring a three-pointer and then adding two bonus shots after being fouled. Bayview coach Chris McNeilly and Carr skipper Paul Melnik, were incensed with the game officials. McNeilly was ejected with 4:11 left in the game – and his team down 68-46 – after taking a second technical foul.

Dwayne Smith led West Hill with 13. Sean Mon Plaisir added 8, Dan Smith 7, Kafele Bingham 6, Juevol Myles 6, Akeem Small 4, Kyle Johnson 3 and Jordan Sterling 1. Papa Oppong dominated both ends of the floor as he led the Titans to the crown. Oppong, with three treys and 6-6 from the free-throw line, grabbed rebounds, blocked shots, stripped opponents of the ball and even had the first jam of the game early in the second half to put the Titans up by 24 points. “He was incredible, just unbelievable – steals, transition and our top rebounder – and he showed he can score, too,” coach Richard Gallacher told the Toronto Star. “What a way to go out his best game, a gold medal and a team championship.” The 18-year-old Oppong was elated with the title. “It was great. We followed what our coaches told us to do and we had some fun, too.” West Hill coach Chris Smalling had nothing but praise for Oppong. “I’ve played against (Oppong) for the past five years. He hurts you in every aspect of the game and does whatever he can to give his team a win. I’m glad we’ve seen the last of him.”
