In the final, the top-seeded Amherstberg General Amherst Generals defeated the 9th-seeded Barrie Central Phoenix 36-31. Amherst led 24-10 at the half but saw its lead cut to a mere point after three quarters with starters Katie Breault, Lindsay Kondracki and Aleah Marton all in foul trouble. The Lady Gens used a 7-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away and claim the school’s eighth straight medal and fifth gold since 2004. General Amherst won a record four straight OFSAA AA titles from 2004-07. Kondracki led the Lady Gens with 13 points in the finals while Jaylin VandeBovenkamp had nine. Christine Belcher scored six points, Breault had four and Marton and Sarah Bondy each had two. “Whether we won or lost, I couldn’t be prouder because of the improvement they made at the beginning of the season,” said Amherst coach Dom Silvaggio. “It’s a testament to their hard work.” Amherst led by 16 in the third quarter but Barrie Central got back into it after the Lady Gens got into foul trouble. Silvaggio said the 7-0 run in the last quarter proved to be what propelled Amherst to victory. “Credit to our girls. A lot of teams would have folded,” he said. “They stepped up and scored the next seven points and that was the difference in the game. It’s a testament to the kids, their resilience and finding a way to win.” Barrie Central was seeded too low, Silvaggio believed, as they were a good team with a star player of their own in Kali Lukan. Lukan played a strong defensive effort against VandeBovenkamp in the finals causing Amherst to have to find other ways to get VandeBovenkamp the ball. Silvaggio said defence was the key. “Our match-up zone gave everyone trouble when it counted. Our defense won it for us. We had trouble scoring ourselves in a couple of games. … We play a lot of games and they have to put in a lot of practice. It’s something they earned. They earned everything they got. It’s something the kids worked hard for. A lot of it has to do with individual work. The majority of work has to be individual fundamentals you don’t have time to work on in practice. … It definitely was sweet. It’s something they’ll always remember.” The eight consecutive OFSAA medals are “quite a streak,” he added. “Our starters, almost every game, it was someone new stepping up.” The Generals spent the last three years playing at the AAA level but dropped back to AA this season. “We’re an AA school,” said Silvaggio, whose team has won five golds, two silvers and a bronze over the stretch. “This year, we went back to AA because we have a young team and a lot of new players. It’s something we always let the players decide, but they had to do it before Sept. 30.” The Generals had one Grade 9 starter and two others in Grade 11. “We decided AA because we thought that was the best chance of winning,” guard Christine Belcher said, adding that being the top seed in AA had its advantages and disadvantages. “It’s tough because everyone expects more of you and you put more expectations on yourself. But it’s also good because you walk into the gym and teams look at you differently because you’re No. 1 and I think that helped us. … It’s the perfect way to finish the season. You couldn’t ask for more. I don’t think any other school can say they’ve won eight straight medals at OFSAA.” The Generals built a 16-point lead in the first quarter, but with foul problems watched the lead cut to a point. “I give our team credit because they regrouped,” Silvaggio said. “They could easily have folded.” Belcher had four points in a quick 7-0 run that gave the Generals breathing room down the stretch. “For us, it’s always been defence that’s gotten us there,” Belcher said. “The offence doesn’t always come, but you can always work hard on defence.”
