The Saints held the Giants Carrie Calhoun, who averages 20 points-per-game, to just two in the first half Thursday and five for the game. “But the kids were a little nervous and offensively it took us a while to get going,” Pedatella told the Sault Star. “We missed some lay-ups and committed some turnovers. Our kids may have wanted it too much. But we settled down in the second half. It’s good to know we were capable of winning and we have to take that into our next game. In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Amherstburg General Amherst Generals clocked the 9th-seeded Rexdale Father Henry Carr Crusaders 55-32 as Korissa Williams scored 15, Courtney VandeBovenkamp 11 and Christina Allen 8. Kaycha Breeze led the Crusaders with 10. Bilgees Grant added 9. The Generals led 36-12 at the half.
The 5th-seeded Mississauga Ascension of Our Lord Eagles edged the 4th-seeded Sault Ste. Marie St. Basil Saints 48-46 as Michelle Asare-Bediak scored 19 and Christine Hyde 15. Samantha Hunt led the Saints with 12. Rachel McLean added 10, Sarah DiDonato 8, Abby Hunt 8 and Corinna Bruni 6. The Eagles led 22-18 at the half. “The girls are extremely upset, but they played so hard that for me, it’s a victory,” said Saints head coach Jim Pedatella. “The scoreboard tells one story, but the coaching staff feels as if we’re winners coming out of this.” The Saints held a 46-45 lead when Ascension of Our Lord’s Christine Hyde drained a long three-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining. St. Basil was unable to answer. “It’s a pretty tough loss, but we’re just trying to keep things together,” guard Katie Komsa said. “We’re upset, but we’re trying to support each other.” Post Sarah DiDonato called it “definitely one of the most difficult losses I’ve gone through.” The Saints (coached by Pedatella) also included Abby Hurd, Corina Bruni, Ktie Komsa, Tianna Deluzio, Rachel McLean, Danielle White.
The 3rd-seeded Tilsonburg Glendale Gemini dusted the 6th-seeded Belleville Nicholson Catholic Crusaders 55-45 as Olivia Sergeant scored 14, including several free throws in overtime. Alexandra Blake added 9, Gabrielle Bossy 9, Nicole Latos 7 and Kayla Provenzano 7. Kaity Shisheesh paced the Crusaders with 27. Nicholson led 17-16 at the half. Sergeant forced overtime by hitting two free throws with 2.3 seconds left. She and Nicole Latos then scored six points apiece in overtime. Trailing by two late in the contest and struggling to put free throws through the hoop, Blake was instructed to intentionally miss her second shot after doing so unintentionally on the front end of a double-bonus situation. Latos went hard to the rebound, tying it up for a vital jump ball with 2.7 seconds remaining on the clock, possession to Tillsonburg. Following a time out, Sergeant followed Blake on a screened cut down the key, accepting Gabrielle Bossy’s inbounds pass for a game-tying lay-up at the buzzer. “Everybody was crying,” said Gemini assistant coach Victoria Sergeant. “We had to pull it together and finish it in overtime.” But with key Nicholson personnel fouling out down the stretch and in the extra period, and will all seven of Latos’s points coming in OT, Tillsonburg comparatively cruised to the victory. “They kind of fell apart after that,” said coach Sergeant. “Overtime went our way.”
In the last quarterfinal, the 2nd-seeded Guelph Bishop Macdonell Celtics hit six treys as they whipped the 7th-seeded St. Catharines St. Francis Phoenix 59-36 as Laura Doyle scored 24. The Celtics led 33-10 at the half. Sarah Slattery led the Phoenix with 11. The Phoenix (coach Pat O’Leary, assistant J Levitt) also included Jennifer Giancaterino, Melissa Giancaterino, Bryne-Lee Sorley, Andjela Mamic, Heather McGhie, Michelle Riva, Shannon David, Kristina Bonk, Kira Lohnes and Rachel Kennedy.
In the semis, the top-seeded Amherstburg General Amherst Generals dusted the 5th-seeded Mississauga Ascension of Our Lord Eagles 56-37 as Christina Allen scored 14, Korissa Williams 13, Courtney VandeBovenkamp 9 and Michelle Harber 8. Michelle Asare-Bediako paced the Eagles with 14. The Generals led 34-17 at the half. Amy Belcher held Texas Tech bound Christine Hyde to 7 points in three quarters.
In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Guelph Bishop Macdonell Celtics stomped the 3rd-seeded Tilsonburg Glendale Gemini 62-44 as Bree Chaput scored 20 and Janine De Leon 13. Alexandra Blake led the Phoenix with 15. Kayla Provenzano added 7, Severen Fathers 5, Elisa Watson 4, Olivia Sergeant 3, Gabrielle Bossy 3 and Briana Marve 3. The Celtics led 29-22 at the half. “We couldn’t answer their shooting,” said coach Mike Bossy, alluding to the hoop’s homily, ‘live by the three, die by the three.’ They actually lived by the three.” Led by Brie Chaput, McDonnell drained a pair of treys in the opening quarter, and then added a third in the second period while breaking open a 12-12 tie with a 17-10 advantage. The Gemini trailed 42-31 after a third quarter in which McDonnell added another trio of threes. In the fourth, forced to gamble and foul, Tillsonburg watched its opponent extend its lead out to 18 points. “A steady march to the free throw line,” said Bossy. “And they probably made 80 per cent. That was a pretty emotional ride. I think we spent our gas getting here (to the semis).”
In the bronze medal match, the 5th-seeded Mississauga Ascension of Our Lord Eagles clipped the 3rd-seeded Tilsonburg Glendale Gemini 57-49 as Christine Hyde scored 16, Jenisha Grant 10 and Michelle Oladipo 10. Olivia Sergeant led the Phoenix with 18. Alexandra Blake added 14, Nicole Latos 9, Gabrielle Bossy 3, Severen Fathers 2 and Elisa Watson 1. The score was knotted at 13 after one quarter. The Phoenix led 30-24 at the half and the Eagles led 37-34 after three quarters. “We were tired puppies at that point,” said Gemini coach Mike Bossy. Ascension featured Georgia Tech-bound Christine Hyde, who would prove extremely difficult to defend, a situation that extended to the entire roster. “A very physical team,” said Bossy. Nicole Latos had drawn the assignment of shadowing each opponent’s most dangerous scorer and eventually fouled out in the effort. “She was just a workhorse,” said Bossy. Ascension took control with a 13-4 advantage in the third. “Four points, you just can’t do that,” said Bossy. Once again, forced to gamble and foul, Tillsonburg would see its opponent extend its lead through the fourth quarter, largely from the free throw line. “Give them credit for that,” said Bossy.
In the final, the 2nd-seeded Guelph Bishop Macdonell Celtics capped an undefeated season by dumping the top-seeded Amherstburg General Amherst Generals 63-52 to avenge a loss in the 2008 final. Laura Doyle paced the Celtics with 20. Janine De Leon added 17 and Bree Chaput 16. Courtney VandeBovenkamp paced the Generals with 22. Amy Belcher added 11, Korissa Williams 10, Michelle Harber 5 and Christina Allen 4. “It was absolutely amazing,” Celtics coach Andy Chaput said. “General Amherst is a strong, strong team that has won four years in a row. The gym was packed with the other teams and everyone was cheering for us. Every basket we scored, the gym erupted. We told the girls at halftime that they were going to come out pressing us and they did,” Chaput said. “The scored eight points in a row and narrowed our lead to two points. But we called timeout and the girls settled down. Our outside shooting was great all weekend. I think we caught a few teams off guard and then in the final we just fed off the crowd.” The Lady Gens, winners of the previous four OFSAA AA titles, led after the first quarter 19-17 but Bishop Macdonell kept up their hot shooting in the second quarter and took a 36-26 lead into the half. Amherst came out of the halftime determined to get back into the game and trailed by only two halfway through the third quarter. The Celtics then hit another three-pointer – one of nine for the game – and then they got a three point play the old fashion way to end the third quarter up 46-38. Amherst kept battling and trailed by only four with three minutes to play but a steal and another three-point play by Bishop Macdonell pushed the lead back to seven. Amherst was then forced to foul and the Celtics made their free throws down the stretch to ice the victory. Generals coach Dom Silvaggio said “I thought they played well,” but shot only 50% from the line. “It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t up to our standards. OFSAA championships are great but with one game knockout, anything can happen. “I couldn’t be any prouder of this group. A silver is still pretty darn good.”
Silvaggio told the Windsor Star “it’s sad our streak has come to an end. It wasn’t that we played poorly. They just shot the lights out.”
