Rachel Hancock led Ingersoll with 16. “General Amherst has never won OFSAA senior girls,” Danese told the Windsor Star. “We just worked great together, so this really wasn’t a surprise because our team earned it.” Team defence and balance scoring proved the difference, said coach Dom Silvaggio. “We just have great balance. They couldn’t key on one person but everyone stepped up at one time or another and scored. …Our defence is what keeps us in so many games. We work so hard.” Silvaggio noted that Ingersoll ran into stern defence down the stretch, trailing by six. “They had the ball with 25 seconds left and they didn’t get a shot off knowing they needed at least two shots (to tie). They never had an open look. It just always seemed like there was someone in their face. … “They just answered the bell every time. It was really a complete team victory.” The final was a back-and-forth affair with Amherst up 18-16 at the half. A second half run put them up by eight but Ingersoll cut the lead back down to two. Amherst made the key foul shots at the end to seal the victory. Silvaggio believed both teams showed signs of nerves early before settling into a tight defensive battle. He said Ingersoll had the ball for the final 24 seconds but Amherst’s tough defense stifled any attempt to shoot. “Our kids hounded them and had someone in their face the whole time. They couldn’t get the shot off,” he said.
