The Sarnia St. Christopher SS Cyclones defeated the Sault Ste. Marie St. Basil Saints 50-37 as Kelly Killoran scored 16 and Kelly Swift 15. The Cyclones led 14-11 after one quarter. The Saints led 25-23 at the half and took command with a 12-0 run in the second half. Cyclones coach Ed Dragan told the North Bay Nugget that “they were a handful, a very strong, disciplined team. They played a very strong first half. It’s a funny game. We pressed a lot and we had that rash of a few, quick buckets and we ended up building that nice little lead, which we needed.” Aine Coccimiglio led St. Basil with 8. Aneila Pulice added 7 and Rachel Cobean 6. Saints coach Ed Green said “the two coaches, we didn’t communicate to the kids what we wanted and there was a couple of missed assignments and I think it was our fault. We’ve got to be a little more clear in our instructins. We got caught and they were able to stretch their lead a bit.” The Saints (coached by Green, assisted by Don Muto) also included Kaitlin DeBoer, Heidi Jaaskelainen, Aine Coccimiglio, Lara Stilin, Dana Ferguson.

The 6th-seeded Ottawa St. Paul Golden Bears defeated the Brockville Thousand Islands Pirates 38-32 as Jyllian Grosse scored 13 and Jenny Guay 9. “We played our best game of the tournament so far,” Golden Bears coach Dan Pignat told the Ottawa Citizen. “We made fantastic decisions on the court. We rarely threw the ball away, took smart shots and had good patience. And Sara Latreille (who suffered a back injury in practice earlier in the week) returned and almost single-handedly shut down their fastbreak. She was awesome on defence.” Traci Cacciato led the Pirates with 10. The Pirates included Kendra Walker-Roche, Heidi Reinstra, Lindsay Coombes.

       In the last quarterfinal, the Niagara Falls St. Michael Catholic Mustangs nipped the Cambridge Monsignor Doyle Mustangs 28-27 as Lindsay Benson scored 12 and Sarah Rabley 9. Rochelle Reid led Monsignor Doyle with 18. The Mustangs (coach Chad Tyszka) also included Allison Monteiro, Kayla Mick, Gina Hummel.

       In the semis, the Sarnia St. Christopher Cyclones defeated the Burlington Lord Elgin Lancers 50-44 as Kelly Swift scored 20, Beth Androschuk 11 and Jessica Revrink 8. Jennifer Knowles led Lord Elgin with 17. Tamara Mijatovic added 12.

       In the other semi, the Ottawa St. Paul Golden Bears defeated Niagara Falls St. Michael Catholic Mustangs 35-32 as Jyllian Grosse scored 20. Lindsay Benson led the Mustangs with 10. St. Paul rallied from an 11-point deficit late in the third quarter. “The rally started with a couple of key steals by Raaymaker and Keeley Manion. And then Jyllian finally lit it up in the second half, after being held to one point in the first half,” Golden Bears coach Dan Pignat told the Ottawa Citizen. The Mustangs led 15-7 after the half and 28-18 after three quarters but faltered when star Lindsay Benson fouled out with four minutes to play.

       In the bronze medal match, the Burlington Lord Elgin Lancers whipped the Niagara Falls St. Michael Catholic Mustangs 66-44 as Amanda Craigie scored 23, Jennifer Knowles 15, Jenna Gonneau 10 and Tamara Mijatovic 10. The Lancers led 21-11 after one quarter and 52-25 after three quarters. Lindsay Benson led St. Michael with 17. Lisa Gartner added 15 and Sarah Rabley 7. The Mustangs (coach Jay Fiocca) also included Nicole Corsaro, Nicole Corsara, Jessica Elia, Jessica Howcroft. Fiocca told the Niagara Falls Review that “after the emotional rollercoaster we went through for the previous games, I think for the most part the kids were just going through the motions. At halftime, we tried to regroup a little bit and played a lot better but Lord Elgin was just relentless.”

       In the final, the Sarnia St. Christopher Cyclones defeated the Ottawa St. Paul Golden Bears 57-41 as Kelly Killoran scored 17, Kelly Swift 14, Jessica Revrink 8 and Kelly Van Hooren 8. The Cyclones bookended the half with a 9-0 run as point guard Kelly Van Hooren ignited the offence. The Cyclones led 19-17 at the break. Cyclones coach Ed Dragan told the North Bay Nugget that “we were fortunate enough to get a couple of steals and convert on them. They wanted to slow it down and we wanted to push it up the floor. … We were fortunate to get the breaks at the right time.” Dragan also noted that 11 of 19 double-A titles had been won by southerwestern teams. “Good prep,” he argued. Jyllian Grosse led the Golden Bears with 23. Ashley Raaymaker added 12. St. Paul’s gave St. Christopher a tussle for three quarters, rallying within 35-32 in the final frame but struggled down the stretch as Grosse and post Jennie Guay fouled out. “They were the toughest defensive team we faced all year. We’re not disappointed because we made the agreement that whatever happens tonight, it was icing on the cake. We wanted a medal and we got a medal,” Golden Bears coach Dan Pignat told the Ottawa Citizen.
