In the opening round, held in Owen Sound: …………………………………………………… The 7th-seeded Tecumseh E.S. L’Essor Aigles trounced the Ottawa Lester B. Pearson Panthers 53-17. “They didn’t impress me at all,” Aigles guard Karen Lachapelle told the Windsor Star. “I don’t know how some teams made it in. They couldn’t have had much competition.” The Aigles opened with an 11-0 run as their full-court pressure wreaked havoc. “We turned the ball over a lot early and that hurt us,” said Pearson coach Peter Brazeau. “We were prepared for a press but preparing for it and then going out and facing it on the court are two different things.” Karen Lachapelle led L’Essor with 11. “We could have killed them if we continued with our press all game.” The Aigles led 20-3 after a quarter. Danielle Comeau led L’Essor with 20. “They’ve never seen our team so they really didn’t know what to expect from me or the other players,” Comeau said. “They weren’t tall so that helped us. I was getting a lot of rebounds and then being fouled so I was able to get some free throws.” ………………………………………………… The top-seeded Owen Sound West Hill Raiders whipped the Burlington Aldershot Lions 52-24 as Kim Johnson scored 20, Lori Lipske 15, Laurel Johnson 6, Dana Kennedy 6, Terry Turner 2, Erica Graham 2 and Jennifer Graham 1. In the second round: …………………………………………………… The Guelph Bishop MacDonnell Celtics defeated the 7th-seeded Tecumseh E.S. L’Essor Aigles 51-47 in double overtime as Laurie Lassaline scored 10. Celtics coach Gerrard Tessaro rejected suggestions that officiating proved the difference. “It’s a tough adjustment for both teams to make to new officials. The fact that we had more girls really helped us. We were able to go eight or nine deep on the bench.” Guard Connie Lachapelle told the Windsor Star that “we know it’s only two referees and 10 players and it’s hard for them to see everything. They were a bit much though. They treated us like we were in grade eight. They were calling everything and just didn’t let us play the game.” L’Essor broke to a7-0 lead but foul calls soon rallied the Celtics to a 9-9 tie. Lachapelle picked up her fourth foul. Aigles coach Lucien Gave noted that “when you don’t have all your horses, it hurts you. The officiating could have been questionable in certain situations. A lot of our fouls were in the back court and shouldn’t have been called.” Lachapelle returned briefly in the second half when the Celtics had built a 35-28 lead and was promptly nailed for her fifth. Still, the Aigles rallied with an 11-0 run to take a four-point lead. But they were hampered by a pair of traveling calls and a three-second violation, which allowed MacDonell to knot the score at 41. Karen Lachapelle then fouled out for the Aigles. L’Essor took a 47-45 lead in double overtime but then Daniele Comeau, who’d scored 23, fouled out and it was all over the for the Aigles.
