We did it before.” Stepanenko added that the halftime deficit inspired his troops. “We are better together. We play as a team. We didn’t come all this way to be negative. If we’re positive, we’re going to win. Something good will happen. If they want to play negative on this team, they’ll sit on the bench. We’re better together, that’s what we say. … This is the best Ascension team we’ve ever had. They’re a great team. They have heart. They know how to play with each other. They always hang around with each other. They have this cohesiveness and they believe in each other. St. Andrews coach Sean Ludwig told the Record that “basketball is a game of runs and they had one more run than we did tonight. We just didn’t have a counter punch for that final run. They had a couple shooters that really got hot from the outside and I think we lost our composure a little bit under pressure. … I know the boys are disappointed. But at the same time, we’re trying to get them to reflect on everything they’ve accomplished and with a tournament like this and with such great competition, being in the final is a major accomplishment. It will take a while for the pain of losing to go away but I think the boys can be proud of how they performed. It was a well-executed game on their part and disciplined on our side. That’s what we’ve been stressing all along.” Theodore Thomas paced the Eagles with 21. Michael Ellis added 9. Daniel Cummings and Quinton Gray each scored 12 to pace St. Andrews.
