Mike Hamilton recovered a loose ball and was fouled. He made both shots and then Ascension turned the ball over again and Gibson hit a corner trey. “In less than five seconds we hit for five points,” Turnbull said. “Those points proved to be pretty crucial.”

In the final, the 2nd-seeded Ernestown Eagles dumped the 5th-seeded Toronto Vaughan Road Vipers 52-42 as Donnie Gibson scored 23 and Aaron Doornekamp 22. “It’s just an awesome feeling. I’ve come in second lots of times. This is the greatest moment,” Gibson told the Kingston Whig-Standard. “We played zone most of the tournament and we stuck to it. We played with a lot of intensity, desire and passion. We gave it our all.” Eagles coach Tom Turnbull said “we played just awesome defence – that was the key really. The kids played the same way every game. Solid defence and minimize the mistakes. Discipline won it for us. They had a lot of role players. We identified that early and took away their ability to perform that role. Instead of doing what they wanted to do, we made them do what they didn’t want to do. … Aaron’s been with me for five years. He really bought into it and understands what it takes. Donnie’s a great scorer and defender. Defence is our prime mandate. We play that and then we find ways to score.” Doornekamp said the difference was “defence and fundamentals. Basically, it’s been that way for five years. We know if we stop people on defence, we’ll find a way to score enough points to win. … We identified their shooters and we got out on them and we rebounded well. Every shot that went up, we battled for [the rebound]. Basically, the whole team went to the boards. We really wanted this.” Turnbull said “I think this team deserves recognition for the defence it plays. Every coach we’ve beaten has complimented us on our passing too. The kids bought into the system and it took us right through the year.” Ashly July led the Vipers with 20. The Eagles finished 32-5 on the season.
