The Chatham CI Cougars defeated the Leamington Lions 60-46 in a rematch of the SWOSSA final, which the Lions won. “It was close to the end,” Leamington coach Rick Dumais told the Windsor Star. “With two minutes left to play they were up by four and we had the ball so we had a shot at it. They outscored us 20-9 in the fourth quarter but most of it came late from the foul line.” The Lions led 25-24 at the half but the Cougars were up 40-37 after three quarters. “It was nip and tuck to the end, a carbon copy of our SWOSSA game,” Dumais said. “Hey, we didn’t expect to win a (ECSSA) championship. We didn’t expect to be here (at OFSAA). So this is all gravy train for us. After our first game up here, the kids played well. We’re not blessed with a lot of talent but we work for everything we get.” Steve Donald had 21 for the Cougars. Sandy McGregor added 15, Colin McGregor 11, Rich Van Lingen 7 and Todd Robinson 6. In the bronze medal match, the top-seeded Ottawa Lester B. Pearson Panthers defeated the Belleville Nicholson Catholic Crusaders 78-66 as Chris Lawrence scored 21. Kevin McGuire led the Crusaders with 19. The Panthers, who had $500 in basketball equipment stolen on their trip to Timmins, “played well against Nicholson,” coach Mike Bond told the Ottawa Citizen. “And we had a strong inside game throughout the tournament. Our guards were a little cold early in the tournament.” The day before the Panthers left for the tournament, starting forward Jason Koch slipped on some ice and was unable to play. Upon arriving at their hotel in Timmins, several members of the Panthers were robbed. The Crusaders (coached by Pat Clancey and Frank Farrell, manager Jason Weaver) also included Colin Walsh, Tim Farrell, Marc Sontrap, Rod MacInnis, Jeff Watkins, Ryan Lietaer, Patrick Whalen, Jason Bly, Mark Duggan, Mike Rathwell and Paul Richard.
