In the opening round, held in Welland, Sudbury St. Charles stunned the favored Hamilton Cathedral Gaels 54-43. Harrison 5, Ross 5, Phillips 3 and Quaill 2, while Murphy, Forbes, Lalonde, Watzenbock and McLeod were scoreless. The Gaels (coach Dick Tighe, manager Pat Noon, manager Joe Noon, manager Wilf Rio) included Bill Sullivan, Nick Villani, Jack Hughes, Sam Galante, Gerry Malcolmson, Vince Hubbard, Frank Spadoni, Henry Horyn, Bob Peet and Jim Maga.
In the quarterfinals?, the defending champ Welland Notre Dame Fighting Irish started slowly but easily handled the Toronto De La Salle Oaklands 62-35. Notre Dame led 27-16 at the half. Jim Mulligan paced Welland with 24. Pat Molloy and Oley Luckiw each notched 10 to lead the Oaklands.
The Toronto St. Michael’s Blue Raiders crushed the Kitchener St. Jerome’s Lions 63-22. Toronto led 24-14 at the half and coasted to the easy win. Mike Rankin paced St. Michael’s with 20. The Lions included Wayne Litzgus.
London Catholic Central defeated Windsor Corpus Christi x-x.
In the quarterfinals, Welland Notre Dame Fighting Irish defeated St. Thomas St. Joseph’s x-x
In the semis, the Welland Notre Dame Fighting Irish clocked the London Catholic Central Crusaders 70-54.
In the other semi, Sudbury St. Charles dispatched the Toronto St. Michael’s Blue Raiders 51-44.
In the final, Welland Notre Dame defeated Sudbury St. Charles 70-57.
