To me, Horton is the best team in the province and we beat them on their home court. We just wanted to play tough Spartans basketball, that’s all.” Cory Lucas and Sean Gibson each scored 13 for the Spartans. John Bustin paced the Griffins with 36. In the final, the 6th-seeded Halifax Queen Elizabeth Lions defeated the 5th-seeded Halifax West Warriors 61-49. The Lions rallied from a 34-27 deficit at the half, ripping off a decisive 15-0 run to start the second frame. “This is just an amazing, amazing feeling,” Jon Thibault told the Halifax Daily News. “It’s really hard to describe. We have an awful lot of pride and we never give up on anything. We wanted this really, really bad.” Queen Elizabeth held Halifax West scoreless for the first 8:19 of the second half until Cordell Wright finally stemmed the bleeding with a trey. But the Lions continued their run, eventually registering a 25-5 outburst. Josh Last scored 11 of his team high 17 during the run. Coach Mike Tanner “told us we could lose our cool or we could come out and play tough defence,” said Last. “Coach always said we had a chance. He made us believe we could do it. He fired us up. There’s nothing more I can say.” Guard Matt Conrad added that “we just followed the pattern. We were clutch the whole tournament.” Matt Clow led the Lions with 11, including a trio from beyond the arc. Jon Thibault added 10. Halifax West had led early as Michael Olsen scored 14 of his game high 19. But the roof fell in for the Warriors. ‘I don’t know what happened,” said Olsen. “Things just went downhill. People started arguing and we just didn’t stay together as a team. When things go like that, you can’t win that way.”
