In the final, the Grand Falls-Windsor Exploits Valley Eagles clubbed the St. Lawrence Academy Blues 67-36. Heading into the tournament, coach John Hatt said he would had been content with making it to the crossover round and defeating one of the teams that he thought had the best chance of winning. “Most of the best basketball is played on the Avalon, so to be able to go out there and compete against those teams is something to be very proud of,” he said. After arriving at the tournament and studying the other teams’ play, the EVH team took notice of the fast-paced ball that many of their opponents are used to playing. Both Ferryland and St. Catherine’s players are proficient in track and field, while St. Lawrence is known for its passion for soccer. At that point, Hatt knew he had to take a chance if they wanted a shot at the gold. “I told the girls, ‘We can’t really run with them, so we’ve got to try and slow the game down’,” he said. “Normally, we more or less run with teams on the west coast, but we changed our tactic – which worked pretty well for us.” Hatt had the team slow down the pace of the game by staying patient and waiting for the right time to fire on all cylinders. “The girls were able to adapt to a different style than they were used to,” he said. “I didn’t only have good athletes, I had smart athletes. That makes a lot of difference.” Hatt also praised tournament MVP Emily Hart for running the offence and dictating the tempo with a measure of savvy.
