In the final, the Gander Collegiate Concordes edged the St. John’s St. Bonaventure’s College Phoenix 72-69 to capture their first title in 26 years. The Concordes trailed by double digits after three quarters but rallied for the win. Matt Mason told the Gander Beacon that coach John Gill delivered an inspirational speech during the break. “A lot of the guys’ hearts just starting coming out. We knew we wanted it, and they didn’t want it as much as we did. We just went out there and ran our guts out for 10 minutes, and pulled it out.” David Summers said “it’s awesome. It’s been 26 years since a Concordes team won. To be able to say we were the team able to win it, it’s an amazing feeling.” Mason said “a lot of our role players, the guys who would come off the bench, really stepped up their game come that tournament. Some of the players who didn’t normally see a lot of minutes were getting more minutes because they were putting it all on the floor.” Gill said “it was a lot of personal satisfaction to watch the growth and development of the team. I find the mental aspect, the confidence and the discipline is one of the last things to gain. They certainly did that by the end of the year. They felt they could do it, and they dug down deep for each other and persevered.”
