In the semis, the Lewisporte Collegiate Lynx edged the Gander Collegiate Concordes 72-65 as Daniel Pearce scored 19, Dante Hiscock 17 and Andrew Snow 15. The Concordes had lost in a regional qualifying tournament but received an invitation into the Tier 2 draw after another team withdrew. “It was kind of lucky for us to get there at all,” post Richard Malayny told the Gander Beacon. “We didn’t play our best at the regionals, and we lost our first game to Exploits and then 30 minutes later had to come back and play Lewisporte. We were dead tired going into the second half of that one, and Lewisporte Collegiate beat us. It was just an amazing feeling to find out we were able to go to the provincials no matter how we got there.” Malayny said foul trouble hurt the Concordes against the Lynx. “That’s when they started hitting shots and before we knew it, we were losing by a good score. We managed to come back some in the end, but we just didn’t have enough time. That was about the worst feeling I ever experienced in basketball. It was heartbreaking. We thought we had luck with us to get into the provincials, and then to play Lewisporte Collegiate again in the semis. We really thought we’d beat them that time.” The Concordes had beaten both finalists during the campaign. “We just couldn’t get it done when it counted,” he said. “We did a lot of work this year to win the provincials because for five of us, it’s our last year. I can’t believe we lost the way we did.”
In the other semi, the Grand Falls-Windsor Exploits Valley Eagles dispatched the Deer Lake Elwood Regional Lakers 67-60.
