Prior to the start of the tourney, a controversy erupted over the participation of the Mount Pearl O’Donel Patriots, who ultimately withdrew from the draw. The Patriots were not permitted to use 4 players (they only had 11 on the roster) because they not students at the school but rather, were grade 8 students from its feeder school, St. Peter’s Junior High. School Sports Newfoundland & Labrador had “80-20” rule which compelled teams to have 80% of their players attend the school they represent. “We would have played with just the seven O’Donel kids,” Steve Knight, a parent of one of the players told the St. John’s Telegram. “But they decided as a group not to even register for the tournament. They said if not for the four St. Peter’s kids who helped fill out the roster, they would not have had a game of ball this season. If the St. Peter’s kids couldn’t play, they weren’t playing.” O’Donel was essentially penalized for being a grade 10-12 school, while other institutions were grade 9-12. The Patriots included Sarah Hiscock.
