In the final, the St. John’s Booth Memorial Braves bombed the Goulds St. Kevin’s Mavericks 64-44. Braves coach Geoff Moore had hospitalized weeks earlier after suffering from the pulmonary embolism but returned to the bench to lead his troops to the title. “I’ve been resting quite a bit of late, and I’m on blood thinners, but it would have taken a lot for me to miss this tournament,” Moore told The Compass. “I’m feeling pretty good right now. I guess with this win, I’m feeling even better because when you spend this long with a group of athletes, it becomes a pretty important part of your life.” The Braves finished 48-1 on the season, losing only to Bishop’s in the 4A qualifying tournament. “In a way,” said Moore, “that loss was good in that we re-dialed, re-focused and had better practices. … What we do have is five legit scorers on the floor who know how to play defence. And if one or two are double-teamed, someone else can step up. We have an inside presence and an outside presence. That’s tough to defend against. This team has to stack up as one of the best high school teams ever in Newfoundland.” Kelsey Moore paced the Braves with 25. Kathleen Dyer added 13. Ashley Collins led the Mavericks with 11. Booth led 40-25 at the half.
