In the semis, the Goulds St. Kevin’s Mavericks defeated the Trepassey Stella Maris Mermaids 79-58. “Stella Maris was making a pretty good run at us right up until the third quarter and I kept thinking ‘anything can happen’ and this might be the time we finally lose one,” Maverick’s coach Clarence Sutton told the St. John’s Telegram. In the other semi, the Deer Lake Elwood Lakers defeated x.
In the final, the Goulds St. Kevin’s Mavericks dumped the Deer Lake Elwood Lakers 79-60. The win was the Mavericks 81st straight against provincial foes. Mavericks coach Clarence Sutton told the St. John’s Telegram that he told his troops in their final meeting that there was no reason they couldn’t keep rolling. “It’s not just a standard about how much they won, but how they went about winning. I don’t think anyone can accuse this team of running up the score any time during the streak, and that’s a real credit to these girls. … We’ll still be very strong.” He added that there’d be some relief once they suffered a loss. “Of course, it all depends on when it happens. But it might be a good thing, because this (streak) is kind of getting out of hand.”
