If Justin King of the Corner Brook Regional High Titans hadn’t nailed a three-pointer with a handful of seconds on the clock, the Titans would have returned from Placentia with silver medals knowing they were almost on par with Holy Heart of Mary – the top-ranked high school hoops team in the province. But King nailed a trey to force overtime and the Titans, after an 86-76 win over Holy Heart, earned gold. “I am not sure what I was thinking,” King told the Corner Brook Western Star. “The ball ended up in my hands and I shot it. And It went in.” Stephen Buckle scored 28, Michael Quigley 24 and Mark Tavenor 18. “Stephen Buckle played huge,” coach Steve Cave said. “He hit some big shots, a lot of big three-pointers. He certainly set the momentum for us early in the game and that continued on.” Tournament MVP Quigley wasn’t surprised by the win. “It is hard to explain. When you are in the game you want to win so bad and I wasn’t surprised when we did. We have great team chemistry. Usually when we play against good teams we play to their level.” Quigley said the sound of the crowd during overtime was deafening. “You couldn’t hear anything, but we dug deep and played good defence.” Cave said “the kids played extremely, extremely well. Everybody stepped up and we shut down their best players and they didn’t have an answer for our best players. We just played harder than them. From the first guy on the team to the last guy on the team, everybody was hitting shots, rebounding, playing defence and that was what it was all about. It was a big chemistry thing versus any other year. … This weekend everything came together for us and the kids found a way to win.”
