In the final, the St. John’s Prince of Wales Collegiate Cavaliers defended their crown by edging the Corner Brook Herdman Huskies 50-47. The loss knocked the Huskies from the undefeated ranks. Mark Woodland paced the Cavaliers with 17, including the game-winning trey with 13 seconds on the clock. Jeremy Somerton added 13. Chris Ogbuah led the Huskies with 19. Adam Warren added 13 and David Joyce 8. Prince of Wales led 28-25 at the half. “We started out the tournament beating Prince of Wales by 20 points in the round-robin, then we beat Gander, Holy Heart, we went through the round-robin undefeated,” Huskies coach Steve Cave told The Western Star. “About six minutes in to the championship game Chad Warren went down with an injured elbow or arm, we aren’t sure what it was, but that put us …. Chad averages 15-16 points a game for us. I think from there we just struggled with the fact we were a little short on the rebounding side. We tried to pound it inside but our jump shots just didn’t fall. We rallied around losing Chad, I mean the biggest spread in the game was four points either way. It was a really close game, they had a three-point lead at the half so there was great defence being played. Everyone’s asked me if I’m disappointed … no way. What these kids have accomplished this year is amazing. For a west coast team from a small locality … disappointment is a word that’s not in our vocabulary. We have six titles to our name this year, we’ve lost one game of basketball … Nowhere near disappointed.”
