In pool A, the Trepassey Stella Maris Mystics emerged with a (2-0) record. Stella Maris thrashed Wabush J.R. Smallwood 76-41 as Rick Pennell scored 19, Mat Holley 12 and Ron Picco 12. Wayne Potter responded with 14 and Cal Jaycock 10 for Smallwood. …………………………………………………… The Trepassey Stella Maris Mystics also nipped the St. John’s Gonzaga Vikings 67-65 as Rick Pennell scored 31. …………………………………………………… In the battle for second in the pool, the St. John’s Gonzaga Vikings smashed Wabush J.R. Smallwood 76-32 as Sean O’Leary scored 24, Colin Dyer 17 and S. Mahoney 10. Jaycock hit 16 for Smallwood.
In pool B, the Corner Brook Regina Knights emerged with a (2-0) record. The Knights defeated Baie Verte St. Pius X 89-37 as Mike O’Reilly scored 26, Dave Brenna 19 and Ed Joyce 12. Bill Traverse responded with 22 and Junior Seymour 10 for Pius X. …………………………………………………… The Corner Brook Regina Knights qualified for the final with a 69-25 pounding of the Avondale Roncalli Cardinals as Mike O’Reilly and Bob Hearn each scored 12. Rick Brinkman responded with 6 for Roncalli. ……………………………………………………… The Avondale Roncalli Cardinals took second in the pool with a 55-48 win over Baie Verte St. Pius X as Rick Brinkman scored 20. B. Wade added 15 and Gus Hickey 12. Junior Seymour led Pius X with 10.
In the final, the Trepassey Stella Maris Mystics trailed 7-10 at the quarter and 12-18 at the half but exploded early in the second to easily handle the Corner Brook Regina Knights 49-35 as Rick Pennell scored 27 and Roy Cheater 10. Carl George responded with 14 for Regina. Also on the Stella Maris squad was Pat Malloy, who, along with Rick Pennell, later coached Stella Maris to the 4A title in 1998. Representing the Southern Avalon district, Stella Maris finished (32-9) on the season.
