In the quarterfinals, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtis clubbed Grand Falls St. Michael’s 54-21 as Bernie Noonan scored 12, Bill English 8 and Charlie Greene 8. Jim Moffet led St. Michael’s with 7. Roy Walsh added 6. St. Michael’s also included Mike Griffen, Sean Fewer.
The Corner Brook Regina Knights clocked the Argentia Bristol Bulldogs 58-26 as Frank Burke scored 21 and Terry Power 8. Mike Brewer led the Bulldogs with 11. Dale Hall added 8. The Bulldogs also include Paul Gillespie, Ken Miller.
The St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders edged Carbonear 33-30 as Brian Kavanagh scored 14 and Bren O’Brien 8. Playing coach Peter Moore led the Carboneau with 7. Carbonear also included Harold Gillespie.
In the last quarterfinal, the Stephenville Harmon Rockets torched the Foxtrap Pioneers 49-19 as Mike Halliday scored 22. Ralph Patten led the Pioneers with 10. Ron Taylor added 7. The Pioneers also included Fred Taylor, Dave Hart.
In the semis, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics defeated the Corner Brook Regina Knights 74-52 as Bernie Noonan scored 26, Charlie Green 12 and Wayne Stanford 11. Frank Burke led the Knights with 12. Charlie Gallant added 12 and Gordon Gallant 11.
In the other semi, the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders nipped the Stephenville Harmon Rockets 40-37 as Harry Husk scored 12 and Joe Wadden 10. Mike Halliday led the Rockets with 11. Bruce Millbrath added 11.
In the bronze medal match, the Stephenville Harmon Rockets clipped the Corner Brook Regina Knights 73-61 as Mike Halliday scored 33 and Wayne Lovell 11. Frank Burke led the Knights with 29. Gordon Gallant added 11. The Knights also included Charlie Gallant, Terry Power.
In the final, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics took revenge for its loss to St. John’s Holy Cross in the 1965 final by thumping the Crusaders by 18 points to capture the 1966 crown. Brother Rice took a 27-19 lead at the half but Bren Dalton, Harry Husk and Joe Wadden rallied Holy Cross to within three before Celtics point guard Jimmy Power took control of the match. Although scoring only 11 points, he completely controlled the pace and set up teammate Bernie Noonan for 16 as Brother Rice pulled away for the easy victory. Jim Power and Wayne Stanford each added 11 for the Celtics. Bren Dalton led the Crusaders with 14.
The all-tournament team featured Bernie Noonan (Brother Rice); Jim Power (Brother Rice); Brent Dalton (Holy Cross); Mike Halliday (Harmon); and Frank Burke (Corner Brook Regina).
