In the quarterfinals of the third annual Eastern Newfoundland Basketball Tourney, the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders defeated Bell Island 44-17 as Harry Husk scored 9. Ron Noftall led Bell Island with 10. Bell Island also included John Fitzpatrick.

The Stephenville Harmon Rockets whipped Grand Falls Academy 84-25 as Mike Halliday scored 25, Davidson 12 and Cardinell 10. Dan Caravan led Grand Falls with 7. Grand Falls also included Roger Guy.

The Argentia Bristol Bulldogs crushed the Foxtrap Pioneers. 61-17 as Brycksiasti scored 21 and Don Piper 14. Edwin Brien led the Pioneers with 6. The Pioneers also included Glen Taylor, Ralph Petten.

In the last quarterfinal, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics dusted the Gander Collegiate Concordes 54-24 as Paul Cochrane scored 18, Bernie Noonan 14 and Randy Dunne 10. Dan Mullins led the Concordes with 8. The Concordes also included Aubrey Anstey, Steve Marshall, Derek Jones, Dennis Mullins.

In the semis, the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the Stephenville Harmon Rockets 56-37 as John (Joe?) Wadden scored 12 and Ed Murphy 11. Mike Halliday led the Rockets with 11

In the other semi, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics defeated the Argentia Bristol Bulldogs 53-41 as Bern Noonan scored 19 and Paul Cochrane 13. Don Piper led the Bulldogs with 17. Roe added 10.

In the bronze medal match, the Stephenville Harmon Rockets clipped the Argentia Bristol Bulldogs 55-45 as Mike Halliday scored 14. Don Piper led the Bulldogs with 14. The Bulldogs also included Roe, Brycksiasti.

In the final, the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders avenged their loss to the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics in the St. John’s city high school playoffs by nipping Brother Rice 44-41 as a pair of 16-year-old juniors stepped up and made the difference. Bren Dalton hit a field goal from the win with a minute to go to break a 41-41 tie, while fellow junior Joe Wadden tossed in 10 points. Ed Murphy led the Crusaders with 19. Harry Husk and Mike Abbott each scored 5. Holy Cross was ahead 12-9 at the quarter. The game was tied at 24 at the half. But Holy Cross rallied to take a 37-30 lead at the three-quarter mark before a final Brother Rice push tied it at 41. After Bren Dalton hit a bucket, Holy Cross froze the ball for the final 45 seconds before being fouled and hitting the insurance free throw. Bernie Noonan led Brother Rice with 14. Greg Simms added 8.
