In the quarterfinals of the second eastern Newfoundland boy’s tourney, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics defeated the Foxtrap Queen Elizabeth Regional Pioneers 45-12 as Paul Cochrane scored 15 and Len Carroll 8. Petten paced the Pioneers with 4. Calvin Porter added 3. The Pioneers also included Chris Hart.

        The St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders edged the St. John’s Gonzaga Regional Vikings 24-21 as Tom Healey scored 12 and Mike Reddy 8. Pat Hearn led the Vikings with 8. Dennis Yabsley added 4 and Richard Simms 4.

        The St. John’s Bishops Barons dusted Bell Island 46-5 as John Beltzer scored 13 and Peter Chalker 11. Tony Fitzpatrick led Bell Island with 4. Bell Island also included Blair Bickford, Gerald Murphy.

        In the last quarterfinal, the Argentia Bristol Bulldogs whipped the St. John’s Prince of Wales Cavaliers 43-24 as Brykcznski scored 15 and Rusty Carr 12. Pat Hearn led the Cavaliers with 8. Dennis Yabsley added 4 and Richard Simms 4. The Cavaliers also included Gerry Lapeyre, Ed Stratton, Dave Butler, Devon Woods, Wayne Bradbury, Bob Noseworthy.

        In the semis, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics defeated the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders 39-35 as Paul Cochrane scored 11. Fred Noftall led the Crusaders with 15.

In the other semi, the St. John’s Bishops Barons defeated the Argentia Bristol Bulldogs 27-21 as Tom Kendell scored 11 and John Baltzer 10. Rusty Carr replied with 13 for Bristol.

        In the final, the St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics nipped the St. John’s Bishops Barons 34-31. Brother Rice took a 14-6 lead at the quarter and were ahead 20-18 at the half. The teams were tied at 28 after three-quarters before Bishop’s lost rebounder Rex Anthony to fouls. Tied at 31 with two minutes to go, Paul Cochrane hit a free throw to put Brother Rice ahead. Len Carroll added two insurance free throws to ice the victory. Carroll led Brother Rice with 12 points. Wayne Malone added 8 and Paul Cochrane 7. John Baltzer led Bishop’s with 16.

        The all-tournament team featured John Baltzer (Bishop’s); Tom Healey (Holy Cross); Len Carroll (Brother Rice); Rusty Carr (Argentia Bristol) Tom Kendell (Bishop’s).
