In what is considered the predecessor for a provincial tourney, known as the Eastern Newfoundland Boys Basketball Tourney, participants included Foxtrap Queen Elizabeth Regional Pioneers. The tournament was an invitational and included Memorial University’s Beothuks.
In the quarterfinals, the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the Carbonear Collegiate Sentinels 66-28 as Percy McDonald scored 20.
United College edged Bell Island 21-20.
Brother Rice smacked Foxtrap 49-28 as Peter Furlong scored 12. Foxtrap included Leo Stern, Fagan.
In the last quarterfinal, Memorial edged Bishop’s 30-27 as Dave Russell scored 15. Bishop’s included John Gaulton, B Woolgar, A Rex, G Cook, Vic Janes, B Summers, Ron martin, D Ralph, J Legge, John Baltzar.
In the semis, the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders defeated St. John’s Brother Rice Celtics 42-26 as Percy McDonald scored 16.
In the other semi, Memorial defeated United College 38-31 as Dave Russell scored 15.
In the final, the St. John’s Holy Cross Crusaders thumped Memorial 61-27 as Percy McDonald scored 21, Tom Healey 17 and Mike Bambrick 12. Over the course of the tourney, 6-2 Percy McDonald of Holy Cross led all scorers with 59 points in three games. Holy Cross’ Tom Healey scored 43. Foxtrap’s Ludwig Stern scored 35, Memorial’s Dave Russell 34 and Bishop’s Jim Gaulton 32. St. John’s Holy Cross finished (11-0) on the season.
The Crusaders were also undefeated in the five-team St. John’s high school league, finishing with an 8-0 record. They were followed in the standings by Brother Rice (5-3); United College (4-4); Bishop’s (3-5); and Prince of Wales (0-8). The Walesmen included Barry Porter, Barry Janes, Ken Parson, Gerry Hanlon, N Matthews, R Eddy, B Hutchings and Matthews.
The all-tournament team featured Percy McDonald (Holy Cross); Tom Healey (Holy Cross); Mike Bambrick (Holy Cross); Dave Russell (Memorial); and John Baltzar (Bishop’s).
