In the other semi, the Moncton Harrison Trimble Trojans edged the Dieppe Mathieu-Martin Vedettes 40-37. “This is what we deserved. We’ve worked so hard up to this point and we’re just so happy,” Trojans post Kristen Atkins told the Moncton Times & Transcript. “Trimble hasn’t gone to the Aitken Centre in a while and we have a lot of grads on this team and this is what we wanted. Now, we’ve got it.” The Vedettes led 21-20 at the half but the Trojans eventually gained the lead on a Stephanie LeBlanc bucket with 10 minutes to play. The teams traded baskets in the final minutes, but it was Atkins, with a jump shot, and Kari Everett, with a free throw, who iced the win for the Trojans. After LeBlanc missed two free throws with 3.7 seconds remaining, the Vedettes Lia St. Pierre launched a desperate buzzer-beater attempt for the tie, but it just missed. “This is just awesome. The girls worked hard all year and we came through a bit of a struggle the last month and lost a couple kids to injury, but we got them back at the right time,” Trojans coach Al Vautour said. “This is the biggest thing for these girls. It’s the same group we won a (junior AAA) provincial title with in their Grade 9 year and we just had to get through the pressure and we did that.” Everett paced the Trojans with 13. LeBlanc added 12 and Atkins 11. St. Pierre led the Vedettes with 14. Christine Ryan added 11 and Danika Jobin 7. “It’s just a heartbreaker. They played us so tough, but it’s still hard to take,” said Ryan. Vedettes coach Mike Woodworth said “Trimble fought hard every single minute, every single second. But we left it all on the floor and we have nothing to be ashamed of.”
