In the quarterfinals, held in Saint John, the 6th-seeded Quispamsis Kennebecasis Valley Crusaders stunned the 3rd-seeded Saint John Greyhounds 56-53 as Jones scored 18, Kent 13, Nowlan 10, Maloney 9 and Creelman 6. Crusaders coach Claire Mitton told the Saint John Telegraph-Journal that the Greyhounds were hurt by Sue McMaster picking up three quick fouls, and her fourth with 2:28 to play in the first half. “She’s the key to the club. They had to sit her down after the fourth foul and she wasn’t back in the game until 14 minutes had been playing in the second half. That’s a hard way to come back in the game.” It allowed Marg Jones to dominate the blocks. Debbie McAloney led the Greyhounds with 12. Sue Beaman added 12, Debbie Gallant 12, Sue McMaster 20, Elaine Foo 5, Tanya Tait 2 and Nancy Keating 2, while Debbie Dunn, Diane Paquet and Kathy Darby were scoreless. The Crusaders hit 10-15 from the line, while Greyhounds were 6-16.
The 5th-seeded Fredericton Black Kats spanked the 4th-seeded Miramichi James M. Hill Toppers 64-47 as Grant scored 19, Gormley 15, K Bird 10, M Bird 10, Cooper 8 and Simmonds 2. Black Kats coach Joyce Brown told the Fredericton Daily Gleaner that “we played a really good blocking game tonight.” Bernadette McCarthy scored 18 to lead the Toppers (coach Diana Bernard.) Ellen Lynch added 9, Tammy Malley 8 Paulette Lynch 6 and Coleen McDonald 6, while Wendy Baldwin, Judy Barrieau, Kathy Sproul, Kathy Flanagan and Lexie Leggatt were scoreless.
The top-seeded Moncton Purple Knights spanked the 8th-seeded Moncton Harrison Trimble Trojans 79-35 as Sherri Thurott scored 20, Wilson 15, Slater 8, Pyne 8, Smith 7, S Thorburne 6, Clement 5, Susanne Thurrott 4, Logan 2 and Wheeler 2. Purple Knights coach Terry Miller said his troops were “nervous” in the first half, after which they led 33-20. Jane Carson led the Trojans with 9. Lee Ann Campbell added 6, Ann Dolan 4, Coleen Raferty 4, Ghisele Hachey 4, Jackie Comeau 2, Michelle Bourgeois 2, Beth Hunter 2 and Heather MacDonald 2, while Jana Carson and Lisa McQuillian were scoreless.
In the last quarterfinal, the 2nd-seeded Saint John Simonds Seabees thrashed the 7th-seeded Bathurst Phantoms 72-39 as Cotter scored 28, Arsenault 12, Lee 11, E Collings 8, S Collings 7, McNutt 2, Cooper 2 and Matthews 2. Seabees coach Dan Mcelman told the Saint John Telegraph-Journal that “we got all the players into the game.” The Seabees hit 22-35 from the line. Ann Dodge (Dodds) paced the Phantoms with 9, Margaret MacDonald added 8, Heather Delicaet 6, Debbie Jamieson 6, June (Ann?) Dobson 4, Katie Cooper 2, Kathy Quigg 2 and Bonnie Christie 2, while Terri Green and Carolyn Hill were scoreless.
In the semis, the top-seeded Moncton Purple Knights whipped the 5th-seeded Fredericton Black Kats 54-38 as Slater scored 16, Thurrot 12, Thorburn 10, Wilson 8, Clement 2, Pyne 2 and Smith 2. The Purple Knights hit 6-12 from the line. Bird led the Black Kats with 18. Cooper added 12.
In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Saint John Simonds Seabees clipped the 6th-seeded Quispamsis Kennebecasis Valley Crusaders 60-49 as Cotter scored 20, Collings 18, Lee 13, Arsenault 7 and Cooper 3. Jones led the Crusaders with 20. Maloney added 14, Kent 4, McCormack 4, Chamberlain 4 and Creelman 3. The Crusaders led 28-24 at the half.
In the bronze medal match, the 5th-seeded Fredericton Black Kats defeated the 6th-seeded Quispamsis Kennbecasis Valley Crusadres 52-47 as K Bird scored 29, Gormley 10, Simmonds 6, Earl 5, M Bird 4, Cooper 2, Murphy 2, Grant 2 and Fitch 2, while two points were unallocated. Kent led the Crusaders (coach Claire Mitton) with 14. Marg Jones added 11 (12? a very sloppy box score), Carolyn Maloney 10, Cheryl (Shannon?) Creelman 6, Karen McCormick 4 (5?) and Mary Chamberlain 2. The Crusaders also included Elizabeth Nowlan.
In the final, the Moncton Purple Knights defeated the Saint John Simonds Seabees 51-46 on strong perimeter shooting by Wilson, who scored 17. Slater added 12, Thurrott 10, Pyne 8 and Thorburne 4. The Purple Knights took command with an 8-0 run to open the second half and befuddled the Seabees with their constantly switching defences. Purple Knights coach Terry Miller told the Saint John Telegraph-Journal that “at the first of the game, they maned to get players open at the baseline and were feeding them the ball for easy points. But when we made adjustments and closed that area off, they kept trying to do the same thing. … We wanted to keep them off balance. That’s been our plan all year, to keep the other teams guessing.” Cotter led the Seabees with 14. S Collings added 10, E Collings 8, Lee 8, McNutt 2, Cooper 2 and Arsenault 2. Seabees coach Don McElman said “we had a little lapse at the end of the first half and it caried over the opening part of the second. That’s where we lost the game.”
