The tournament opened with controversy as Fredericton High failed to arrive for a game with the Dalhousie Condors. Joanne Thurrott, tournament manager, ruled the game a forfeit but Fredericton claims that the provincial transport ministry had declared the roads unfit for travel and had refused to transport the team. Fredericton appealed to the NBIAA which ordered the game to go ahead. Fredericton prevailed.

In the quarterfinals, held in Moncton, the top-seeded St. Stephen Spartans clubbed the 8th-seeded Saint John Greyhounds 57-32 as Johnston scored 28, M McGeachey 9, Halford 3, Stuart 2, Flewelling 2, McNay 1, Hansen 1 and Best 1. Bonnie Lockhart led the Greyhounds with 19. Betsy Colwell added 11 and Betty Young 2, while Brenda Ferguson, Joan Foster, Debbie Cooper, Donna Harris, Joanne Jefferson, Debbie Ervin, Diane Allaby, Nancy Lawlor and Janet Tease were scoreless.

The 2nd-seeded Moncton Purple Knights spanked the 7th-seeded Oromocto Blues 68-32 as S MacDonald scored 16, D MacDonal 10, Wishart 9, Goggin 8, Ford 7 and Arsenault 7. Debbie McMillan paced the Blues with 15. Jannie Lanteigne added 6, Janice Ruggles 6, Debbie Read 3 and Kathy Wall 2, while Donna Doucet Pam pugh, Mary Lynne Le Maire, Lindzi Miller, Pat Randall and Heather Wood were scoreless.

The 3rd-seeded Saint John St. Vincent’s Fighting Irish whipped the 6th-seeded Riverview Royals 45-25 as Fleiger scored 15, Morrison 12, Gormley 9, Barry 5 and McDonald 4. Becky Dobson paced the Royals with 6. Ruth Radcliffe added 5, Janet Proude 4, Karen Hegan 4, Debbie Pate 2, Fern Downey 2 and Trudie Collins 2, while Barb Birkett, Jean Woodley, Jane Mair, Janet Fisher and Jeanann Blair were scoreless.

In the last quarterfinal, the 4th-seeded Fredericton Black Kats stomped the 5th-seeded Dalhousie Condors 53-35 as Bourassa scored 15, Jensen 14, Dean 11, Stevenson 7, McKinnon 4 and True 2. Ann Williams led the Condors with 8. Raymonde D’Amour added 8, Diane Maltais 8, Suzanne St Pierre 4, Diane Valdron 3, Dale Hamilton 2 and Pauline Brown 2, while Jeannine Stevens, Linda Sullivan, Megan Roy, Ann Russell, Debi Walsh, Debby Pilon, Debbie Moran and Robya Eddy were scoreless.

In the semis, the Moncton Purple Knights clocked the Saint John St. Vincent’s Fighting Irish 54-23 as S MacDonald scored 19, Goggin 14, Wishart 9, D MacDonald 6, Levangie 2, Grose 2 and C MacFarlane 2. Fleiger led the Fighting Irish with 9. MacDonald added 5, Gormley 3, Barry 2, Montague 1 and Griffin 1.

In the other semi, the St. Stephen Spartans annihilated the Fredericton Black Kats 82-25 as Johnston scored 35, Hansen 24, McNay 9, Halford 6, M McGeachy 6 and Stuart 2. Jensen led the Black Kats with 8. Bourassa added 6, Dean 5, MacKinnon 4 and True 2.

In the bronze medal match, the Fredericton Black Kats clipped the Saint John St. Vincent’s Fighting Irish 42-27 as Jensen scored 17, Dean 10 Bourassa 5, Jamieson 4, Stevenson 3 and True 3. Ellen MacDonald led the Fighting Irish with 17. Beth Gormley added 4, Sue Fleiger 3, Cathy Barry 2 and Valerie Griffin 1, while Nancy Morrison, Anne Healy, Roxy Skidd, Terry Montague, Norah Sullivan and Carmen Doucette were scoreless.

In the final, the St. Stephen Spartans defeated the Moncton Purple Knights 59-45 as R Johnston scored 36, Hansen 12, McGeachy 4, McNay 3 and Stewart 2. With the win, the Spartans extended their winning streak against high school competition to 90 games over previous three years. St. Stephen finished (32-1) on season. S MacDonald led the Purple Knights with 15. Goguen added 14, D MacDonald 7, Ford 4, Arsenault 4 and Wishart 1.
