In the quarterfinals, held in St. Stephen, the Saint John St. Vincent’s Fighting Irish clubbed Moncton Vanier 76-27 as Armstrong scored 22, Fleiger 20, Skidd 12, Forrestal 8, Marritt 7, Perry 4 and Reid 3. Christine LeBlanc paced Vanier with 15. Faye Laurie added 4, Andrea Melanson 3, Cecile Michaud 2, Cormier 2 and Nowlan 1, while Auffrey, Bertha Duguay, Mona LeBlanc and Anne-Marie Bourgeois were scoreless.
The Moncton Purple Knights thrashed Dalhousie Academie Notre Dame 79-26 as Humes scored 18, Allen 16, Clowater 12, Douthwright 12, Buzzell 6, B Wallace 6, S Wallace 3 and MacDonald 2. Liz Vatour led Notre Dame with 12. Linda Haley added 10, Valdron (Waldron?) 3 and Boutold 1, while Phillips and St. Pierre were scoreless.
The St. Stephen Spartans whipped Newscastle Harkins 63-24 as Johnson scored 23, Francis 9, Lee 9, Brown 7, Francis 6, Flewelling 3, Walker 2, Meehan 2 and Parks 2. Theresa McArcheron led Newcastle with 10. Foran added 5, Black 4, Leversedge 2, Seltzon 2 and Judy Matchett 1, while Fenelon was scoreless.
In the last quarterfinal, the Fredericton Black Kats nipped the Woodstock Wildcats 52-50 as Jardine hit the winner with 10 seconds to play. Thornton paced the Black Kats with 16. Jardine added 10, McIntosh 9, Stevenson 8 Tingley 2 and Ritchie 2. Leslie Olmstead scored 15 to pace the Wildcats (coach Carolyn O’Neill, manager Linda Moffat, manager Theresa Bryant). Carol Keyes added 13, Barbara Cunningham 9, Janet Stewart 7, Cindy Paul 5 and Betty Jean Stewart 2, while Anita Cole, Margaret Harrison, Turman and Judy Montieth were scoreless.
In the semis, the St. Stephen Spartans dusted the Saint John St. Vincent’s Fighting Irish 64-59 as lee scored 23, Johnston 19, L Francis 13, Meehan 4 and M Francis 4. Skidd led the Fighting Irish with 16. Fleiger added 15, Armstrong 11, Merritt 6 and Bastarache 2.
In the other semi, the Moncton Purple Knights clipped the Fredericton Black Kats 53-30 as Buzzell scored 13, Allen 10, Douthwright 8, Humes 8 and Clowater 4. Stevenson led the Black Kats with 13. Thornton added 9, McIntosh 4, McGinn 2 and Watts 2.
In the bronze medal match the Saint John St. Vincent’s Fighting Irish nipped the Fredericton Black Kats 43-41 as Fleiger scored 16, Skidd 15, Armstrong 8, Reid 2 and Perry 2. Nancy McIntosh led the Black Kats (coach Wendy Andrews, manager Peggy Swanton) with 15. Sue Stevenson added 9, Paula Scholten 4, Annalee Tingley 4, Wendy McGinn 3, Ann Fenety (Finley?) 2, Jean Jardine 2 and Kathy Thornton 2, while Linda Ritchie, Marilyn Watts, Sabine Khoury and Beth Morrison were scoreless.
In the final, the Moncton Purple Knights, which had lost the 1967 final to Fredericton, were not to be denied as they defeated the St. Stephen Spartans 58-54. Nancy Buzzell hit 19 for Moncton. Joyce Douthwright added 14, Clowater 12, Humes 9 and Allen 6. Lee led the Spartans with 23. Johnson added 21, L Francis 5, M Francis 4 and Walker 1.
