The Riverview Royals clipped the Quispamsis Kennebecasis Valley Crusaders 94-77. The Crusaders (coached by Paul Vaughn and Gary Breen) included Jack Tilley, Tylor Connolly, Chris Spurrell, Ben Richard, Ben Tait, Brad Payne, Alex Loughery, Brad Sanford, Seth Ramsay, Ethan O’Neil, Peter Davis and Ian Crowley.
The Saint John Greyhounds outran the Fredericton Bernie MacNaughton Highlanders 81-62. The Highlanders (coached by Steve Chapman and Eric Matheson) included Will Houser, Josh Campbell, Tyler Dunnett, Dimitri Mann, Jay Smith, Morgan Tatlock, Greg Burdett, Greg Nason, Nick Smith and Tristan Stanton.
In the last quarterfinal, the Fredericton Black Kats bombed the Moncton Harrison Trimble Trojans 126-55. The Trojans (coached by Nick Earle and Clint Bateman) included Dan Maxwell, Dexter Fox, Matt Brine, Mason Dou, Malcolm Baxter, Dylan Roach, Nick Evans, Jenson Benoit, Matt Friars and John Richardson.
In the semis, the Fredericton Leo Hayes Lions dusted the Riverview Royals 101-84.
In the other semi, the Fredericton Black Kats crushed the Saint John Greyhounds 106-48 as Val Nelson scored 21, Chris Arisz 14 and Stanley Mayambo 13. Devon Rector led the Greyhounds with 15. Sean Clarke added 8 and Carter Roderick 6. Black Kats head coach Mike King told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal that the goal was to play a solid 40 minutes of basketball, both offensively and defensively. “The guys take pride in playing team basketball and that’s what they did. We’re really happy with the outcome today.” Greyhounds coach Peter Vincent said “we’re up against a team that’s the strongest in the province and has been for years. I’m satisfied that the guys played hard right to the very end and that was the important thing for the Grade 12s who won’t be back.”
In the final, the Fredericton Black Kats nipped the Fredericton Leo Hayes Lions 71-70. “It’s always great being in such a competitive rivalry but doing it on this stage is awesome,” said Black Kat Stanley Mayambo. “All of us pushed each other every day in practice and never were satisfied until we got a hold of the banner. Being such a great team gave us all the confidence and trust in each other to get the job done.” The Black Kats led 15-12, 39-28 and 49-48 at the quarters. Black Kats coach Mike King told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal that “it was too close, but that’s the way it’s been all year with these teams. They enjoy playing each other and they leave it all on the floor. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Leo Hayes program. John gets those guys to work for 40 minutes. … I always wanted to be a coach and give back to the game of basketball that was so good to me. I’m very happy to be home and do this in front of some high school friends who gave me a tremendous amount of support.” The Lions took a 51-49 lead early in the fourth quarter as Leyu Titarenko notched an and-one but Val Nelson answered with a bucket and two free throws that gave the Black Kats a five-point lead. Jake Urquhart hit a bucket and a free throw to draw the Lions within one with 29.4 seconds to play. The Black Kats turned the ball over. Trailing 71-70 with 21.7 seconds left, Jare Stafford drove to the net and fed Titarenko, who missed a layup at the buzzer. “They got a really good look and it just bounced our way,” King said. “It was just a great game. I’m really happy and proud of our team.” Lions coach John Hickey said “we’re incredibly proud of our guys. We worked our tails off. This is a special game for a lot of reasons. This was fun and it was a great basketball game.” Val Nelson paced the Black Kats with 22 on 7-16 from the floor, 3-5 from the arc, 5-8 from the line and 9 boards. Stanley Mayambo added 12 on 4-11 from the floor, 2-5 from the arc, 2-4 from the line and 5 boards. Sawyer Eddy notched 10 on 2-12 from the floor, 0-3 from the arc, 6-9 from the line, 10 boards and 6 assists. Dan Luton scored 10 on 4-8 from the floor, 2-4 from the line, 9 boards and 2 assists. Pat Kendall notched 9 on 4-5 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 1-1 from the line and 8 boards. Jeong Wood Park added 6 on 3-9 from the floor, 0-2 from the line and 4 boards. Paul Gerges scored 2, while Seong Woo Park, Will Howatt, John Lazarev, Eli Boyko, Chris Arisz, Ethan Brewster and Dan Greechan were scoreless. The Black Kats hit 25-66 (.378) from the floor, 5-15 from the arc and 16-28 (.571) from the line, while garnering 51 boards, including 14 on the offensive glass, 27 turnovers, 10 steals, 12 assists and 18 fouls. Jared Stafford paced the Lions with 18 on 7-15 from the floor, 2-7 from the arc, 2-2 from the line and 4 boards.
