In the other semi, the Fredericton Black Kats defeated the host Riverview Royals 68-64 as Pat McAllister scored 21 and Andrew Wright 13, including a key trey down the stretch. McAllister hauled down 10 rebounds while Danya Bubar added 11 points and Bruce Thompson 10. Andrew Sullivan paced the Royals with 30. Greg Halley added 12 and Brett Langis 10.
In the final, the Fredericton Black Kats defeated the Sussex Sonics 88-69. The Black Kats shut down Sonics sharpshooter Merv Maxwell in the second half to avenge a loss in the 2003 final. “We wanted to move the ball well from the start,” Andrew Wright, who scored 20 on 7-20 from the floor, told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “We did it. We got the ball inside and when the post guys weren’t scoring, they were passing out to us. We just took control and attacked the basket really well.” Championship game MVP Bruce Thompson scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Kats while Danya Bubar scored 15 points, dished out 11 assists and hauled down five rebounds without turning the ball over in 34 effective minutes at the point. Pat Sharkey added 11, Pat McAllister 7 and Elliott Thompson 7. “They were very physical but we just out-hustled them,” said Fredericton’s Bruce Thompson, the game’s most valuable player. “That was the key factor in that game.” Maxwell scored 27 for the Sonics on 8-24 from the field. Sussex shot .170 in the second half. Mathew Finnis added 18 points and nine rebounds. “We started to fall apart,” said Maxwell. “People panicked and then we just fell apart. We didn’t stay calm and we didn’t slow it down. It is disappointing because we didn’t play well. We can play a lot better than this. We just didn’t.” Fredericton led the bulk of the first half, but never by more than five as the Black Kats’ balanced scoring attack was matched, in large part, by 15 points early on from Maxwell. And when Maxwell went to the bench with his second foul at 14:29, the Sonics went on a 9-2 run, only to see Fredericton match it and go ahead briefly before Larry Sharpe’s three-ball put Sussex up 42-40 at the half. Sussex went cold early in the second stanza and Fredericton, with some good defence and quick transition opened a 56-48 lead after Wright hit a neat runner 5:19 into the half. “We stopped running our offence,” said Finnis, of Sussex’s 5-for-29 shooting woes in the second half. “We weren’t patient. We lost control of the game.” Then Elliot Thompson keyed a 12-5 run with three free throws after Aaron Johnson fouled him on a long shot from the left perimeter. Suddenly, it was 75-61 with 5:28 left. It was the Black Kats sixth title in seven seasons and 11th since the Final 12 format started in 1987. “It is very nice and I think we are going to go on a little streak again here soon,” said Bruce Thompson. “We have a really good team; a young team and they are going to win again next year.”
