In the final, the 2nd-seeded Sussex Regional Sonics edged the top-seeded Fredericton Black Kats 67-65 as Jeffrey scored 28 and player of the game Muscroft 23. The Sonics trailed by 17 in the first half and by 44-30 at the half. “The boys really pulled together when we were behind,” Sonics coach Peter McAleenan told the Saint John Telegraph-Journal. The Sonics shifted to a zone at the half after trailing 44-34 at the break. McAleenan told the Fredericton Daily Gleaner. McAleenan said “we went to a zone that we never play and they had some good clear shots but they missed them. It’s funny … We had to do something to change some things around. They could play against that zone the next 10 nights and crucify it with the good shooters they have. But they just rimmed the ball a couple of times and that’s all we needed to get back into it.” Jeffrey told the Saint John Telegraph-Journal that “the same thing happened to us last year. Everyone thought we’d win it. This year it turned around for us.” Jeffrey added that Sonics weren’t motivated by revenge for their loss in the 1990 final. “We just wanted to play our ball game and that was it.” McAleenan said “these guys weren’t supposed to be able to play this year with Ron (Ryan) an da few more of them gone. We lost five starters. Right about now, I don’t think I’ve ever had a win where I’ve appreciated it as much as this one.” Flynn led the Black Kats with 17. Alward added 12. Black Kats coach Gary Young told the Fredericton Daily Gleaner that “we got a little tentative. Instead of being aggressive and attacking the zone, we sat back and allowed them to climb back into the game. We reacted poorly for a few minutes. Once the kids came out and looked to penetrate with the ball, we did a fine job against it. But by then the game was tied and it was going to be a dog fight and that’s what it was.”
