In the final, the Grand Manan Community Breakers defeated the Harvey Lakers 45-39. Star forward Jerrica Foster was held scoreless for almost 25 minutes but broke out in the second half with 15 points and 17 rebounds as the Breakers rallied from a 20-12 halftime deficit to capture their third consecutive crown. “The first half was pretty brutal,” Foster told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “But the fourth quarter we stepped up and realized we wanted this.” With the score tied at 34, Foster hit back-to-back shots to give the Breakers a four-point lead with two minutes to play. They led by seven with 40 seconds on the clock. Vanessa Corsini added 9 points and Madeleine Ballantyne Rice 8, along with 11 boards. Sara Green scored 7. the Breakers outrebounded the Lakers 55-32. Alex Black led the Lakers with 16. Lisa Bell added 8 and 6 steals. Kate Kelly scored 5. The Breakers outscored the Lakers 20-9 in the fourth quarter and avenged a 45-34 loss in a seeding tournament earlier this year. “We didn’t want to take it for granted,” said the Lakers Alex Black. “We said, we’re both equally good teams. It wasn’t our day to win.” The Breakers scored just two points during a 12 minute first half drought but the Lakers shot poorly in the second half, hitting 5-40. “We just seemed to break down a little bit everywhere,” said Black. “We couldn’t get out shots to drop and we got down on ourselves when we looked at the score. We beat ourselves in the end, we really did.” Foster said “we had to figure out how to start scoring more. They played really good defence. We didn’t play our best game, I’ve got to say. We were lucky and we just pulled it off in the fourth quarter.” Coach Wayne Veysey said things looked grim in the first half. “Basically, we had to put the ball in the basket. In the second half, we managed to hit those shots whereas in the first half, they were rimming out on us. We knew we were going to have bad runs and good runs and they hung in there until the end.” Veysey said he told Foster at the break that “you’re getting some rebounds in there, your shots will start to drop for you. Just don’t rush it. She settled down.”
