The Breakers upset a pair of No. 1 seeds to earn its sixth straight trip to the New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletic Association’s high school basketball championship. “It feels as if we are meant to be there.” Breakers coach Brian Nixon told the New Brunswick Journal-Telegraph that “we had an up and down year but the boys played well when they had to.”

In the final, the Grand Manan Community Breakers defeated the Edmundston Saint Mary’s Academy Eagles 56-55 as Jayden Wilson scored a desperation bucket as the shot clock expired. Officials were uncertain and consulted with the scoring table before saying the bucket was good. “That has to be my biggest shot ever,” Wilson, who scored 19, nabbed 14 boards, dished 3 assists and had 2 steals, told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “We were fighting hard for that ball and I grabbed it in the air and threw ‘er in. I was hoping for the best. I thought the buzzer already went off. I saw the ref put his finger down and I just knew it was in and I was happy.” Eagle Simon Jalbert said “we thought they went over the time limit but according to the officials, they didn’t. It was questionable but all we had to do was rebound and we didn’t at the end. It was our fault. We have nobody to blame but ourselves. They shot, they missed, like 50 times. I jumped but the ball would be in another yellow player’s hands. I was pogo-sticking into the rim trying to get that rebound but it just never came to me.” Grand Manan centre Brian Linton said “I was just under the hoop when Jayden got the ball. All I yelled was ‘shoot’. I saw it go up, it was in the air, the buzzer went off and right through the net. I knew it beat the buzzer.” Saint Mary’s used a late 8-2 run to take a 29-27 lead at the half. Grand Manan started the second half on a 6-0 run and eventually led 42-36 and 45-39 early in the fourth quarter before Tyrone Gardiner pushed it to 48-41 with a three-pointer with seven minutes left and Jayden Wilson hit a running lay in 30 seconds later for a 50-41 advantage. But the Eagles countered with a 14-3 run to take a 55-53 lead into the final minute. Tyler Bainbridge hit the first of two free throws to cut the margin to 55-54 with 50.2 seconds remaining. But Andre-Pierre Bosse missed four free throws and Grand Manan got another chance. They missed three shots but corralled the rebound each time. Jalbert said “we had a run but that means nothing. They won it. They’re champions.” Wilson said “we didn’t show up as well as we wanted but I’m proud of my team. We got this far for the first time in history. I’m happy.” Jason Guptill added 13 points for Grand Manan while Ethen Graham grabbed 9 boards. Bryan Gervais led St. Mary’s with 23 points and 20 boards. Andre-Pierre Bosse added 8. Eagles coach Stephen Dunn was selected New Brunswick high school boys’ coach of the year.
