In the final, the Campobello Island Consolidated Vikings defeated the Harvey Lakers 86-75. The Vikings rode a strong send half to the win. “I don’t know why but we always come alive in the second half,” Vikings player of the game Dustin Barker, who scored 20, dished 8 assists, pilfered 9 balls and nabbed 6 boards, told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. The Vikings and Lakers were tied 39-39 at the half. Chad Brown added 21, along with 6 assists and 6 boards, Jeremy Hooper 15, along with 7 boards, and Nick Fletcher 11, along with 9 boards and 3 blocks. Dayne Craig led the Lakers with 26, including four from beyond the arc, and 8 boards. Barret Williams added 12 in limited duty because of foul trouble. Glenn MacMullin added 9, all on treys, Gabriel McBride 8, along with 6 assists and 6 boards, while Bill Peppin scored 7. The Vikings outrebounded the Lakers 43-30. “It was nuts, really,” said Barker of the atmosphere. “It was everything I expected.” Coach Tom Hendershot was chosen the New Brunswick boy’s coach of the year. The score was knotted at 39 at the half but the Vikings built a 68-54 lead with nine minutes to play and the Lakers never drew closer than nine. Barker told the Fredericton Daily Gleaner that “we have the best fans. They’ve travelled with us everywhere. Man, there was a ton of people. Their support helped us a lot.” Chad Brown said “Harvey has a spectacular team. But we wanted to come in here and take this away from them. We’ve been a second-half team all year, so once we had a good first half, we were confident we could get the job done. … We have a very balanced team. There’s no real star player. We all give an honest effort.” Brown said getting Williams in foul trouble “definitely hurt them. He’s been dominating inside all year.” Lakers coach Dave MacMullin said that “on Barret’s fourth foul he was just diving, trying to tie it up for a jump ball. When you’ve got your best player going all out like that, you’ve got to admire the guy. He played with his heart. … They had 20 offensive boards and that’s far too many. They shot 57 per cent the first half. Even though we were tied at the half, I thought we were a little tentative defensively. We gave up too much of the middle and that’s where they’re most effective. In the second half, we didn’t really get a flow going where we felt comfortable.”
