In the semis, the Grand Manan Breakers dumped the Fredericton Devon Park Christian Eagles 88-66.
In the other semi, the Grand Falls John Caldwell Golden Knights defeated the Boiestown Upper Miramichi Boas 89-55.
In the final, Grand Manan Community Breakers defeated the Grand Falls John Caldwell Golden Knights 66-62. The Breakers went on a 6-2 run in the final 1:21 to edge John Caldwell. Peter Allaby broke the tie on a short jumper, game MVP Mike Cheney hit a 13-footer with 30 seconds left and then sent Ryan Miller in for the clinching hoop with three seconds left. “This is really special,” Mike Cheney told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “Basketball is the No. 1 sport in Grand Manan and every game, the fans fly into the place. It’s fantastic. The Breakers led 35-24 at the intermission, but John Caldwell started its rally with a 11-4 run to kick off the second period. The Breakers stretched their lead back to 11 points shortly after and led 58-48 when the Purple Knights made one last charge, tying it 60-60 with 2:14 left. But the Breakers had enough gas left to capture their second class A title and first since 1994. Allaby led all scorers with 19 points, while Cheney chipped in with 18. “The fact I got MVP doesn’t mean a lot,” Cheney said. “We had a balanced effort. I am so proud of everyone. Justin Labbe and Eric Rossignol each netted 14 for John Caldwell. Mitch Turcotte added 12. Grand Manan finished (26-4) on the season, while John Caldwell finished (26-9).
