In the final, the Sussex Sonics edged the Bristol Carleton North Stars 67-65 as Erin McAleenan drove the lane and banked a runner with 35 seconds to play. McAleenan had faced a box and one defence for most of the final quarter but still found space for the winner. “I have played a lot of basketball and when you first start, those shots don’t go in,” McAleenan told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “The first playoff games were frustrating, but I had to learn to be disciplined. You have to be patient.” The Sonics led 6-5 early but never again until McAleenan’s jumper. Game MVP Erin Monahan led the Sonics with 12 points and 12 boards. “Our defence has been good all year and our offence has clicked, at times,” said Monahan. “We kept our composure and we told ourselves not to get down. I don’t think we did. Carleton North led 61-53 with 6:02 but ran into foul trouble and the Sonics converted at the line to set the stage for the winning hoop. Carleton had a shot at the title but Ginny Fisher’s jumper with 15 seconds remaining bounced out of the hoop. Jennifer Savage paced Carleton North with 14 points, while Fisher added 13. The Sonics hit 10-12 from the line in the final five minutes. “We had [free-throw] games with the team all season, they opened the gym early for us and we worked on this all year,” said Monahan, who was 6-6 from the line. “It paid off.”
