In the final, the Woodstock Thunder defeated the Dalhousie Regional Condors 89-73. Dalhousie led 26-24 after an electrifying first quarter and trailed just 41-38 at the intermission. But the Thunder outscored the Condors 28-14 in the third quarter to build a 69-52 cushion. Joel Everett drained 27 points, Jordan Irvine contributed 16 points and 15 rebounds, Scott Anderson 14 points and Will Thornton a dozen rebounds. Southwest Conference player of the year Jake Taylor, as usual, provided backcourt stability with a triple-double: 12 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists. Ross Kinney came off the bench for seven points and six steals. “We just wanted to come back and get some revenge,” Everett told the New Brunswick Telegraph-Journal. “It’s not the way we wanted to feel when we left this building last year. We knew what we wanted to do. We came back and got it done. A lot of people had Dalhousie pulling the upset. But we knew if we played our game, we could take care of business.” Daley, the Northeast player of the year, netted a game-high 28 points for Dalhousie. Grade 10 forward Ryan Smith helped out with 15 points and 11 rebounds while senior guard Matthew Smearer had 15 points and five assists. “They’re a great team,” Daley said. “We knew we had to play a perfect game. On offence, we weren’t getting the ball movement. On defence, we were getting outsized.” The Condors wore red armbands as a tribute to the survivors of the Bathurst High players who were killed in a mid-January highway accident. Condor Robby Daley’s twin brother Timmy had been in the accident and survived. He sat in a wheelchair beside the Condor bench. Daley said “it was my dream, my goal, to play on this court. I wanted to win it for my ‘Boys.’ Those guys in that tragedy were my best friends and they all talked about playing in this game. I wanted to win for them so bad, but Jake Taylor came over to me and said, ‘This was for the Boys’ and you can’t get mad at that. … They are a great, great team. It was my dream to play on this court. Now my dream is to actually win here.” Jake Taylor said “I empathize with what Robby’s going through. We all knew who (those players) were. I was an acquaintance with them. I think it would have been good for Robby to win to give back to them, but he played a terrific game. I’m sure they’d be happy for him. ´Taylor added that the Thunder were motivated to win after losing narrowly in the 2007 final. “I was here two years ago when we won. I didn’t contribute as much (then), but we were seeking revenge (for last year). This is my last year and I needed to do something about it. The second time around, it still feels amazing.” Everett added that “they’ve had a really tough year. Robby lost seven really great friends and his brother was in that terrible accident, too. I told him ‘This win was for them’.” The Thunder shot .500 in the second half and out-rebounded the Condors 54-33 overall. “We shot extremely well the second half,” Everett said. “We controlled the boards and played really smart, I thought.” Woodstock, which beat Dalhousie 97-61 in December, finishes 32-8. The Condors wind up 34-7.
