The Senators rallied to knot the score at 54 with 30 seconds to play. “They got possession of the ball and barrelled down the court,” Senators coach Gester Jakobson told the Stonewall Argus. “We didn’t want to take a foul because that would have sent them to the line. They stalled and stalled, and then their big guy (Troy Curie) scored a bucket right at the end.” A long jumper by Senator guard Jared Buchko rolled off the rim at the buzzer. “All in all, the guys played excellent for me. After we won that first game, we thought we had a chance to win it all, but it just didn’t work out that way,” Jakobson said.

In the final, the 2nd-seeded Morris Beavers defeated the Minnedosa Chancellors 56-40 as 6-8 post Barry Bergen dominated the paint, while scoring 20. Bergen was elated to win the crown after playing a backup role when the Beavers won the crown two years earlier and he was in grade 10. “It feels better this time,” said Bergen. “We did it ourselves. Last time we had guys like Eric Thomas leading the way. This time it is me and my guys.” Bergen was named the most valuable player at the championships averaging 23 points, 10 rebounds and 8 blocks per game. “He is a large part of our offence and such a power defensively,” said Beavers coach Bill Ginter. “At the beginning of a game we want to establish Barry on the inside game because of his size. Double-teaming him doesn’t always work, and if it does, it just opens up the game for the rest of our shooters. Barry has worked hard to become a big man player. He’s dedicated. … The guys stuck with the game plan and controlled the match. The guys played a super game defensively.” Steve Sawatzky added 16 for the Beavers while Patrick Groening scored 14. “Steve really came out to play in this tournament and Jason Charney had his best game of the season in the final playing opposite to (Minnedosa’s) top scorer,” said Ginter. “Barry’s defence is often overlooked but he had at least eight stuff blocks in the final.”
