need them to contribute in one way or another,” Trojans coach Tara Kelly told the Winnipeg Free Press

Winnipeg River East stayed close through most of the second half but Winnipeg Oak Park pulled away down the stretch with a 14-0 run. “River East played really well (in the last 10 minutes of the first half), got back in it and took it inside on us and caused us all kinds of problems,” Oak Park coach Murray Brown told the Winnipeg Free Press.
In the final, the top-seeded Winnipeg Oak Park Raiders defeated the defending champion and 2nd-seeded Winnipeg Vincent Massey Trojans 59-58 after leading 33-26 at the half. Sabrina Barnes paced the Raiders with 20 points. Holly Kitchen added 19, Katie Lafreniere 5, Sam Breakendridge 5, Kelly Picard 4, Jessica Stromberg 5 and Alareen Doherty 2, while Sam Jewell, Laura Morton, Teri Nault; Lisa Deriviere and Mandy Frain were scoreless. Jenny Ezerim paced the Trojans with 25. The title was the Winnipeg Oak Park Raiders third in tournament history in a game played before a crowd of 1900. Winnipeg Oak Park led 33-26 after a back and forth first half of action. The Raiders stayed in front for most of the second half until Vincent Massey’s Allison Degroot evened the score at 55-55 with 3:44 left. But baskets by posts Sabrina Barnes and Katie Lafreniere, the last one coming with under a minute remaining, gave the Raiders a three-point advantage. A steal by Vincent Massey’s Jenny Ezirim, her ninth of the game, followed by a layup, cut the lead to one point with 36 seconds left, but the Raiders hung on for the victory. “It feel’s just awesome. We just never gave up,” Barnes, who also played volleyball for Oak Park, which lost in the provincial final in the fall, told the Winnipeg Free Press. “We lost in volleyball so it’s just so special for me to win it in basketball. This is just the best thing that could happen to end the year for us.” Raiders coach Murray Brown said “we had trouble scoring against their defence in the second half but when we needed a big stop, we got it. Our kids never gave up and played super defence. This is just a real determined group. I’m really proud of them.” Barnes said “I think a lot of teams would have given up when they went on their run late in the game but we knew we could pull it out if we played strong defence.”
