In the last quarterfinal, the 3rd-seeded Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings dumped the Winnipeg Kelvin Clippers 63-56 as Pam Flick scored 19, Leesa Zemliak 15 and Carlye Gabor 13. “This was the toughest game we’ve had all year,” Vikings coach Stew Farnell told the Brandon Sun. “They were a good athletic team and were a lot bigger than us, so that didn’t help. Our veterans were the ones that came through for us. That is who you want to come through for you.” Sandy McEwen paced the Clippers with 15. The Vikings led 31-29 at the half. The Clippers (coached by Hymie Fox) also included Sarah Smith, Jennifer Bell.

In the semis, the top-seeded Winnipeg Dakota Lancers dusted the 5th-seeded Winnipeg John Taylor Pipers 76-53.

In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings thrashed the 2nd-seeded Winnipeg Glenlawn Lions 53-38. “We played a very, very disciplined game with some excellent defence,” Vikings coach Stew Farnell told the Brandon Sun. “I think they only got four points in the fourth quarter. We played a very controlled game, got a few steals and layups. We also got some good performances out of key people and that makes for a good all-around effort.” The Vikings led 23-19 at the half. Pam Flick paced the Vikings with 20. Leesa Zemliak added 14. Zemliak had “her best game of the season,” Farnell said. Cheryl Lamotte paced the Lions with 27.

In the final, the Winnipeg Dakota Lancers clipped the Brandon Vincent Massey Vikings 63-53. Lancers star Terri-Lee Johannesson got into early foul trouble with three fouls in the first quarter but her teammates picked up the slack as Dakota built a 16-10 lead after one quarter and led 27-24 at the half and 44-33 after three quarters. “We were very concerned,” Lancers coach Peter Falk told the Brandon Sun. “The fouls appeared to be the type of contact the officials usually let go. I thought we were going to have a hard time keeping her in the game.” Johannesson and teammate Allison Laferty each scored 19 to pace the Lancers. Andrea Pales added 13. “With Terri-Lee out of the game, she [Flaherty} really came on and assumed a leadership role,” Falk said. Vikings coach Stew Farnell said “they just had more horses than we did. They were the better team and it showed.” The closes the Vikings got was within 31-29 in the third quarter. “I think part of the problem was it took us so much energy to get back in the game after being down so many,” Farnell said. “Then we had sort of a lapse and allowed them to get an easy bucket to give them the momentum again. … We didn’t make the shots that we needed to make in the second half. We had several shots that were probably six to eight feet away that we didn’t make. We could have closed it up and who knows what could happen then?” Pam Flick led the Vikings with 17. Carlye Gabor added 9. “I think we played pretty good,” said Gabor. “We hadn’t played them all year and we really didn’t know what to expect. Terri-Lee is good, but we couldn’t stop some of their other people too. They’ve got a really good team, it’s not just Terri-Lee.” Flick said “we played as a team throughout. In the games we played to get here, everybody contributed and we played as a team. I think we’re closer together now than we were before, that’s for sure.” Farnell said “I was very proud of our effort. Dakota’s been walking over everybody all year. But they were in a game tonight and they knew it. They didn’t walk over us, that’s for sure.” Johannesson told the Winnipeg Free Press that the title “feels great. We’ve been playing together for three years and when we’re playing our best, nobody can beat us.”
